RAINBOW AFTERNOON

"Don't you just love those rainy afternoons in New Orleans when an hour isn't just an hour - but a little piece of eternity dropped into your hands - and who knows what to do with it?"

I'm saying that with my best Blanche DuBois southern accent
and I'm in a state of delectable melancholy, perpetuated by a rain-soaked afternoon in which I am selfishly languishing, accompanied by a cozy cup of steaming tea and the contented purring of several lazy cats.

Occasionally I resort to cheap theatrical tactics, in order to annoy my critics.

Rainy afternoons were made to indulge in languishing, and today I made the most of it. The temperatures are mild, the cold bite of winter is a thing of the past. Everything outside is sprouting green and some of the trees are almost starting to bloom. I'm slowly but surely emerging from my seasonal cocoon.

I'll never get used to the infuriating clock change - which is one of the most ridiculous and annoying inconveniences ever inflicted upon mankind. It serves no discernible purpose.

In early evening the rain stopped, the clouds parted, and a spectacular rainbow appeared in the golden light of the setting sun.

I pulled on my boots, grabbed my El Cheapo camera and ran outside to capture the spectacle for posterity. The rainbow was already fading over the house.  I happened to see the tail of it glowing beyond the trees in the meadow by the cow field.

Despite the mud and the strong possibility of falling on my ass (again), I bounded over to the meadow and managed to snap a few pictures before it disappeared.

Unfortunately, there was no pot of gold at the end of this rainbow (believe me, I looked).

  2. rainbows ARE beautiful things, aren't they, blanche?

I am starting to see earth awakenings in my corner also - tree buds and flower stems.

and FUCK DST; it should be abolished!

    1. The rainbow made my day - which proves how boring my days are.....

DST should indeed be abolished, and if it isn't - we the people should revolt. Uprisings, strikes, burning, and pillaging are in order.

  3. Perfect end of a rainbow. Hello, Jon. Found your blog. How? - I don't know now! Senility presides. Thinking you might be my neighbor (Yay) I found this not so; ha you're in a different time zone. So am I , at times LOL. I live in the hills of farthest corner of northeast Tennesse, . Spring is hitting hard here today. First sight of Redbud blooms this morning, Magnolia buds yesterday.
Going to really enjoy reading you. Your post of 'the wind' tells me you should be writing books; if you aren't already. So you are a pianist; hoping there are samples of your talents on here on the blog. Later.

    1. Thanks for visiting my blog, Caddie.
Strangely enough, I'm still in the same time zone (Central) that I was when I lived in West Texas - and I was only 20 miles from the New Mexico border.

I'm am presently living ALMOST in eastern TN, but not quite - and I'm only about five miles from the Kentucky border. It's a lovely place and the people are nice (unlike some of the ones in TX). It's presently 75 degrees and my three cats are outside enjoying it.
I will put some of my piano videos on future posts (I can't promise when, but I will....).

  4. We've had a two-day break in the rain here and I've been trying to get things caught up. Those are beautiful photos, Jon. Reminds me that life is not all tree-trimming and septic tank problems. Thanks!

    1. Geo, it's hard to find rainbows in this often-gloomy world, but when I do I make the most of it. I'm sorry to hear that you're having septic problems. I have a septic tank, too, and the thought of it intimidates me...... I'm really not used to all of this wilderness stuff.....

  5. So beautiful Jon. Such wonderful photos. Actually we had a fairly mild winter, for which I am very thankful and I know you are. Thankfully neither one of us fell this winter. Made it through another winter! Spring is just around the corner Jon. Enjoy!

    1. Here in TN it seems that the worst winter months are January and Feb. - thank goodness they are over. And, YES!! we both made it without falling on the ice this year!

  6. I totally agree with you on DST! Totally useless and annoying...and probably bad for us--LOL!
    Love your rainbow. :)

    1. I truly despise DST. Last fall I didn't even bother to turn my clocks back.

  7. At first it felt confusing, but moving to Arizona where there's NO DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME (change) feels some of that OK.
Rain ... even its after-effects, remains one of my least-favorite things. Still, your photos are beautiful.

PS - Lovin' the St. Paddy's Day kitty!

    1. Hey, one of the best things about AZ is no DST! I've always liked rain, but - as with snow - it's only enjoyable if you can stay home and watch it through a window.

    2. DST drives me nuts! I was not even aware that it had happened until a kind friend brought it to my attention. So lots of missed appointments, and showing up at the shops at the wrong time.

By the way I LOVE the cute Irish cat pic. I'd put that one in a frame and hang it on my walls for the rest of my days. But I'm Irish as hell...

    3. DST is a major annoyance and a completely unnecessary one. Last autumn I didn't turn my clocks back. Things almost seem to be timeless here in the wilderness, and I like it that way.

I'm glad you like the Irish cat. I'm very partial to anything Irish, despite the fact that I don't have a drop of Irish blood.

  8. DAMN, you got some gorgeous photos of that rainbow!!! They are sometimes very hard to capture. We had one two weeks ago. It seemed to come down right in gay New Hope..how funny is that!?! Alas I couldn't get the pictures to pull out the rainbow. And get me started on the Daylight Savings Time. While Im FAR from a morning person, I do not like it dark to go to work in.

    2. I don't often chase rainbows but I thought this one was worth the effort.

A rainbow in gay New Hope - that's funny!
I am DEFINITELY not a morning person, either. I'm never fully awake until around midnight.

  9. For using an "el cheapo" camera, you sure managed to get some great shots of that rainbow. And I do hope you're right about the cold bite of winter being a thing of the past. It was eighty-five degrees here earlier this week, but nighttime lows are supposed to dip down into the thirties this weekend. I reckon that means I'm gonna have to close the windows during the night...

  10. I missed commenting on this post last time. It is amazing. Like something out of a Biblical painting. You can just imagine some Victorian having a great time with that image. I always get my camera out if I see a rainbow but never managed to get a shot like that.

I love comments. Go ahead and leave one - I won't bite. But make sure you have a rabies shot just in case.
