DISASTER!

I just spent an hour writing a new blog post, which was a continuation of my previous post Behind the Wheel. In my biased and conceited opinion, I thought my new post was great: deliciously long, irresistibly humorous, and...(of course)..... interesting.

I was in the process of correcting a few typos (hard to believe, but even perfect people make mistakes). I pressed something on my keyboard (I still can't figure out what the hell it was) and

MY ENTIRE BLOG POST VANISHED!!!!!!
I didn't delete it but it disappeared nevertheless.
There's no way in bloody hell that I'm going to attempt to write it again. My spontaneity is gone- along with my sense of humor.

How the holy shit can a post disappear when I didn't delete it?? I know that there's no way to retrieve it - short of voodoo or selling my soul to the Devil (hell, I did that long ago).

To say that I'm EXTREMELY pissed would be an understatement.

Change of Subject

Yesterday on my blog I received an unsigned comment from someone Anonymous. I mistakenly assumed that it was from a personal friend of mine. As a "joke" I wrote a flippant reply - part of which was in Spanish.

To my horrendous embarrassment, I later discovered that the comment wasn't from whom I thought it was.

I apologize profusely for my sarcastic reply.

If anyone comments anonymously, it might be best to sign a name (even a fictitious one), so I get some idea of who it might be.

I used to get comments from an anonymous person who only signed his (her) initials. They happened to be the same initials as one of my cousins, and for a long time I thought the comments were indeed from my cousin.

I'm going to make dinner now, and TRY to recover from the loss of my blog post.

  3. Jon,

Hate when that happens. Even if you can remember enough to rewrite, it never quite seems to capture the spirit of the original. Save often, I guess.

    1. You're right about saving often. Today I didn't do it.

  4. I hate when the blog ruins your day. Somedays it has a mind of it's own and refuses to cooperate. Just move on. all you can do.

    1. I'll eventually be inspired to rewrite it, but not today.

  5. Jon,
I've had that happen! And you're right, you can never recover that spontaneity from that first draft. Like you, when I write a blog post I type as I think; brain to my fingertips. Isn't is a mystery as to why something like that happens? I think it is because I type too fast and I hit the wrong key. I've tried to rewrite the post but it's never the same so I don't even try now when that happens.
Your other "problem", answering an "Anonymous" who you think is someone else. Have you ever sent a text message to the WRONG person? I have. SOOOO embarrassing.

    1. The spontaneity is the most important thing. Like you, I always write quickly and say exactly what I'm thinking. It can't successfully be repeated.

On several horrific occasions I have actually sent an email to the wrong person. That can REALLY be embarrassing.

    2. Jon,
My most embarrassing text message I sent to the wrong person was while I was at work. One of my co-workers has a reputation for spying for the boss/owner of the hotel. He's friendly with you but reports everything back to the boss/owner that you say. While he was talking to me at work one day, Pat sent me a text message. I sent Pat a text message back that said "I can't talk to you now because Ted's spy is talking to me." Guess what? That message went to the man (the spy) who was talking to me! After he left I went to send Pat another text message and then realized who I sent that text message to! I immediately tried to delete it (can't) and then went about my business. About an hour later I ran into him and the first thing he said was "Ron, whose the rat?" I got caught! I just said "That message wasn't meant to go to you." I was so embarrassed but then thought "What the heck, now he knows that we all know he's a spy." Nothing more has been said since, and he even talks to me (too much actually). But now I delete all other text messages received or sent except Pats. Hopefully that will never happen again.

    3. That is SO funny, Ron!!! But I know it wasn't funny at the time.
I actually agree that it was a good thing the "spy" guy finally got nailed. He deserved it.

  6. Jon, there's key right under the "shift" key ominously labeled "ctrl". Once I looked up at Wikipedia what this key does, didn't understand any of it. Why H.P. would stick such a crazy key where it's easily hit instead of the shift is totally beyond me.

    1. I have never yet figured out the purpose of the mysterious CTRL key, and I'm highly suspicious of it.

It's also extremely annoying to have the Caps Lock key so dangerously near the "a" key.

  7. I too have done that...is it not the most frustrating thing ever!?!?!? And like you should, the humor and feel is gone! I usually rectify the anger by a stiff drink or a good round of sex or other form of pleasure

  9. Go to your blog. Click on "design" at the upper right-hand corner. On the page you now see, on the left-hand side, a list of things under the "new post" button: overview, posts, pages, comments, etc. Click on "posts". You should see the post you lost. Click on "edit" and there it is, right where you left it. Unless.... well, just try it.

    1. Donna, unfortunately it didn't work - but I truly appreciate your input.

The post actually disappeared while I was writing it, even though I never purposefully deleted it. The main problem is that I never clicked "save" as I was writing. If I had clicked "save" I would have probably saved at least part of it.

I hope this makes some sense. I'm presently dealing with two fighting cats (Scratch and Scruffy) as I'm writing this.
I wish I could delete cats....

    2. I had this happen once to me, when I was using a stupid laptop, Windows 10. Somehow I accidentally "selected" the whole body of my entry while I was creating it. When I did that, just one click of "back" or "enter" clears out the whole thing. How one can "select" a whole page without intending to, I don't know. But it's happened.

  10. and my 'near-death' experience makes it unanimous. 'Near-death', as in if I'd the strength, our computer would have been lobbed in the pool. It's probably been a year, and I'm still sore.

I hope you're feeling (somewhat) better today; perchance you might channel your frustration into an ever-better post? Someday.

  11. Computers have an uncanny way of raising blood pressure.

I'll try to reconstruct the post from memory. I still have my memory - - although there is some debate as to whether I still have my mind....

  12. That has happened to me a couple of times and the loss is withering. Out of habit now I always copy before I click publish--just in case. But it is still possible to lose the whole post before that point, too. Well, I know I would have loved it. ;)
