TOUCHED WITH GOLD

Today is the day I was supposed to pick Scruffy up from the vet. Instead, I went there to retrieve the empty carrying cage that I brought her in - and her favorite blanket. To say it was heartbreaking is an understatement.

My only consolation was the glorious weather: sunny, cool, inspiring. These final days of October are truly touched with gold.

The foliage along the drive to town was spectacular and I could have taken dozens of great photos. Unfortunately there's nowhere to pull over on the narrow road. If I ever attempted to, I'd probably be killed by a logging truck or go over a cliff.

So I risked my life by pulling over once and very hastily took these pictures.

When I got near home I snapped these photos of the road that leads to my hermit abode:

After I got home (and recovered from the severe trauma of driving to town) I decided to take a few pictures in my back yard forest. I knew this beautiful sunny weather won't last. Rain is expected by Halloween.

There were lots of birds (including some hawks), several squirrels, a few wasps - - and one big mosquito that landed right on my camera (I'm not kidding). He must have been left over from summer.

  1. Oh, Jon, I'm so sorry about Scruffy. That's really heartbreaking. But please don't blame yourself.

We just returned from visiting friends in your neck of the woods, but I'm not sure there was quite as much color there as in your pics. There were nine deer frolicking in their front yard while we were there, though, and I do mean frolicking. It was fun watching them. Almost as much fun as watching their new kitten. Abandoned cats and dogs have a way of showing up on their property. They have quite a menagerie.

    1. I'm extremely upset over Scruffy.....but there's always the possibility of adopting another sweet feline in the (not too distant) future.

Susan, when I first moved here I frequently saw whitetail deer romping around on my property. Lately there are more loggers, hunters, etc. and less wildlife. It's a shame. I'm glad you had an enjoyable time at your friend's menagerie.

    1. The beautiful weather and spectacular foliage has truly lifted my spirits. My only regret is that autumn is passing so quickly.

  3. Can't compete with Nature's condolences but sending mine anyway. What a beautiful place she had to live, and a kind companion xx

  4. As a cat lover I enjoyed looking around your blog. If only I lived in the US I would have a wonderful time prowling round your shop. Those cushions are to die for

    1. Valerie, I'm always delighted when cat lovers come to visit (but I don't want to frighten any dog lovers....). Thanks for visiting my blog.

  5. Hi Jon - it's good that you were touched with some gold on what would have been a heartbreaking trip. I was thinking about you. I've been there too - came home from the vets with just the leash and her collar. Nine years later and I still miss my dog.

Thanks for taking some lovely pictures. Hopefully, winter is in no hurry to arrive.

    1. The beautiful weather and gorgeous foliage soothed my weary soul. I only wish I could enjoy looking at it more - but I'm always a nervous wreck when driving. Oh well, at least I can full enjoy the forest in my back yard.

I went outside today and there were lots of annoying wasps everywhere. I was hoping they would all be gone by now, since it's so close to winter.

  6. How gorgeous!! The three deciduous trees I can see across the way at the other apartment complex are totally bare now. This was a delight for the eyes.

Was sad to bring home the empty carrier and favorite blanket. I know that feeling too well. *hugs*

    1. Today (Tuesday) is still very mild and mostly sunny. I'm savoring it because the thunderstorms are supposed to arrive tomorrow (just in time for Halloween).

Rita, I'm very tempted to adopt another cat but I don't want to do anything rash. I'll think about it and wait until after the holidays.

  7. I'm gratified to see Mother Nature's showing off, perhaps in an attempt to heal your heart. Baby steps, my friend.

  8. I am so sorry about scruffy. I have been tied up with working & other family problems. I did take a picture of my front heard tree but it no way compares to the magnificence of yours. It brings me back to childhood days in Jersey when we would play in the woods & climb bonesy's hill. Do you remember them?

    1. I'm still really upset over Scruffy. The problems never stop - it's one unpleasant thing after another. I do remember the woods near your house and our NJ childhood days. Things have changed so much - - it's a whole different world now. Take care.

I love comments. Go ahead and leave one - I won't bite. But make sure you have a rabies shot just in case.
