SNOW

Ironically, I was going to write a post about a rare Southern California snowfall that I experienced when I was in high school.
I'll save it for another time.

I woke up around dawn this morning. Cold, miserable, and half-asleep, I stumbled my way to the kitchen and got the cats some food and fresh water.
I was seriously considering crawling back into bed, when I happened to look out the kitchen window. It was snowing!

This was a big surprise, since only a few feeble flurries were expected late last night.
I grabbed my El Cheapo digital camera and raced outside to capture the momentous event.

 The back yard at dawn

The front yard just after dawn. The camera flash was on and it really illuminated the snowflakes.

Bosco, doing some serious snowflake watching.

There was no significant accumulation, but it's enough to remind me that December is here.

    1. I was hoping the snow would wait until Christmas Eve, but it made a surprisingly early visit. I think it will all melt before it heads your way.

  2. Blow it down to South Alabama would love to see some snow instead of rain for a change.

    1. I'll do my best, Jean - but it will probably turn into rain by the time it gets to you. I'm in the northern part of TN, only a few miles from Kentucky.

    2. Oh my, our weather pattern always follows the US. I dread it, and to think I once loved the stuff.

That's a great photo of Bosco gazing at the white stuff.

    3. I love the white stuff as long as I don't have to go outside and shovel it or drive in it. I'll try to keep it away from your area....

  3. Jon, these photos are beautiful! I am refreshed by them. Especially like Bosco in calm contemplation of the snow. Do build a little snowsquirrel for me and call it E(a)nest. Our birthday month is HERE!

    1. If I can't make a snowsquirrel, I'll try to find a squirrel covered with snow. It should be quite easy.
I'm beginning to dread the birthday month, Geo. Growing older is too painful....

    1. I was surprised at how nice those photos turned out. I'll have to remember to keep the camera flash on every time it snows.

  5. Wow! Those were some BIG snowflakes. That's my favorite kind. They're so pretty, but they usually accumulate way too fast. At least, they did when we lived in Maryland. Here, on the rare occasion that we see big flakes (or any flakes) it usually doesn't amount to anything. But once in a while...

I kinda thought you might've gotten some snow. We're going to see the new year in with our friends in Tennessee, and their furnace recently died. (Luckily, they have a humongous fireplace.) The fella emailed last night to let us know the part arrived via priority mail yesterday, so it's humming along again. He also said it was in the nick of time, because when he was walking back to his house from the mailbox, it started snowing like crazy.

    1. I'm glad your TN friend got the part for his furnace. They always have a way of breaking down when the weather is the coldest. When I lived in Texas my furnace stopped working on the COLDEST night of the year - it got down to FOUR DEGREES. There was a big ice storm and I couldn't get anyone to come out and fix it for well over a week. If I didn't have a fireplace I would have perished.

    2. BRRR! Somehow, I never thought of Texas getting that cold.

Unfortunately, our friends' furnace broke down again. Now, they have another part on order. Theoretically, they'll have it up and running again if a few days.

  6. Ya … what Jean said! I'd be thrilled beyond words to look out and glimpse those flakes. Something about scenes like this make me feel (almost) 5 years old once more.

    1. Snow always makes me feel nostalgic, too. Heck, I always feel (almost) five years old.
I should probably get out and do a snow dance. That might help scare the snow down to your neck of the woods.

  7. Oh, that's the best kind of snowfall to watch--the snowflakes gently dancing to earth! How lovely!
