THAW

And suddenly a blinding light burst through the darkness - melting the ice, rousing the birds, distributing a feast of warmth to the desperate and needy.

I emerged from my burrow, shed two of my three layers of clothes, and suddenly remembered that - somewhere beyond winter - is a soothing promise of spring.

If you look carefully at the above photo, on the lower right - below the burst of sun - is a tiny glimpse of the corner of the back porch.
I mentioned this only because I knew it would thrill you.

My cat Scratch (also known as Kitzee) found a rare patch of sunlight and basked in it - rolling around and showing off.

I'm definitely not in a rolling mood. This past frozen week was filled with ill health, annoying anxiety attacks, and bouts of abysmal depression - not necessarily from the cold weather, but from life in general and all the unpleasant complications it rudely presents.

But that's an old story, which I've been regurgitating too often.

How about a glimpse of my back yard - - which is an unattractive jumble of naked trees and scrawny semi-evergreens.

I'm writing this - not because I have anything interesting to say, but because I felt a need to validate my existence - which at times seems to be slipping away without my knowledge or permission.

  1. Jon, your jumbled back yard is in no way unattractive. It is full of the land trying to teach itself to you. I know because mine does that too and I used to take a chainsaw to it. Lately I just tell the trees, "Ok you guys are more durable than I am. When you're done and fall over, I'll post a sign for free firewood." Works so far.

    1. Geo - I can hardly trust myself with a can opener - let alone a chain saw. I admire the trees from a safe distance and let them "do their thing" however they wish. Their ability to survive and flourish always gives me hope.

  2. I wish I had a back yard like yours as well as that beautiful sky. Cats sure know how to show off, as I write my cat is rolling about on the white lawn. Daft cat!

    1. Cats have an uncanny ability to find the smallest patch of sunlight and bask in it. And they do indeed love to roll around - sometimes even in the dirt.
Rolling - I suppose - is a sign of contentment.
I should probably do it more often.....

  3. It feels like spring here. Quite honestly, I’d rather the ground stayed frozen awhile, because my yard and the pasture are like a swamp. It’s difficult to maneuver my dog around the muddy areas to prevent his bringing mud in the house. Cliff has no sympathy... he keeps saying, “Well, you wanted a dog and now you have one.”

    1. Today it feels like spring here, too. It's nearly 60 degrees. It's a great time to let the cats outside because there aren't any wood ticks (yet). Unfortunately there's mud everywhere - and I seem to bring a lot more of it into the house than the cats do.

    2. Cats are so fastidious, even my 3 barn cats who live outside never get dirty.

  4. Jon, I am always so relieved to see a new post of yours. And of course I love the pics of your sweet cats big time. I admire you so much because you manage to post fascinating posts on a regular basis (despite your depression). How do you manage it? I can scarcely leave a comment - well alone a charming and insightful post. So I just let my sorry blog gather dust, etc.

Anyway, you have always been such a good friend to me, so please give my regards to Geo, Helga, Lisa and Susan - I'm just not capable of leaving individual thanks at the present time. But I do value all of you immensely.

Clinical depression is the worst. I would not wish it on my worst enemy.

Thank you for being my friend.

    1. Dylan, I'm flattered that you described my posts as "fascinating". Lately I've been in such a dark and intensely gloomy mood that all inspiration for writing has abandoned me. I try to keep things upbeat and (hopefully) interesting but it isn't easy.
I always write as if I'm just talking to myself - yet I keep in mind that others are listening, so I try not to be too depressing.

Never let your blog gather dust. Your thoughts are important to me (and to your other friends).
I was glad you watched "Romeo and Juliet" (1968) the other day. It's one of my favorites.

  5. I hope it stays warmer down there! A bit of sunshine can lighten the day...well, cats think so. ;) I love the pics of your wild woods.

We've got another winter storm rolling in today, I guess. Single digits above and below zero for the next week's highs. -8 to -20 at night. Been a cold snowy winter so far. Groundhog says early spring. I do love all the snow, but I'd pass on the -60 wind chills for the rest of the winter--LOL! ;)

    1. Well, I certainly hope the Groundhog is right. Wow, your temperatures are really frigid - hopefully you and Annie are staying warm and cozy.
I think our cold weather has vanished - at least for awhile. It got up to nearly 60 degrees today, although the inside of the house is still cold. Hard to believe that only a few days ago it was 15 degrees!

  7. I really appreciate that. After all of this unusually frigid weather I'm enjoying the thaw and the patches of sunshine.

  8. Sounds like there has been some very bad weather around, and the thaw will be extremely welcome, not just to you but to the cats, I bet.

    1. After all of the unbearably frigid temperatures, I am really savoring this mild week - which seems more like spring than winter. I've let the cats outdoors several times and they love the sunshine.

  9. Your first two paragraphs are fantastic. I could just imagine you scratching your belly and emerging into the sunlight like a bear. :)

I wish our cats would go somewhere and roll in the sunshine. Instead, they're fighting over which one of them can take up the most space between me and the monitor. (sigh) Gotta love 'em!

Dylan, if you're reading this... hi-ya. Hang in there, sweetie. We haven't forgotten you.

    1. Susan, I'll admit it - I like those first two paragraphs, too. Occasionally I impress myself.

My kitties Scratch and Bosco always fight to see who can get closest to the computer, when I'm using it.

I love comments. Go ahead and leave one - I won't bite. But make sure you have a rabies shot just in case.
