LESS THAN A WEEK AWAY

Thanksgiving is less than a week away!

Have you decided what six people you will be inviting for dinner? Have you strategically measured the safe distance between each guest who will be sitting at your disinfected table?

Despite the prospect of disagreeable November weather, will you be dining outside?
Have you decided what festive Thanksgiving mask you'll be wearing?
Will your turkey be wearing a mask?

Don't panic. These questions are rhetorical. I'm merely throwing out  unimportant tidbits for you to ponder.
You're very fortunate that - lately - I've been politely keeping 99 per cent of my real thoughts to myself.

Actually, I think many people are secretly delighted that Thanksgiving is banned (restricted?). No massive preparations, no hectic traveling, no relatives that you hate, no annoying children (admit it - they're annoying....)

Methinks the detrimental shadow of Big Brother is making us less thankful every day....

So, do I have anything to be thankful for this year?
Yes - I'm extremely thankful that I learned how to make homemade booze. It has immensely enhanced the rural purgatory in which I'm ensconced.

In fact, I'm delightfully under the influence as I write this...

I'm thankful that six discerning people liked my piano video in the previous post. They have exquisite taste for appreciating my talents and creativity.

Did I ever mention that my piano recordings are consistently my most unpopular blog posts? It's true. Unfortunately true. Disconcertingly true.

Ironically, when I posted a half-naked photo of gay retro porn star Peter Berlin, my blog got nearly 1,500 hits (not in one day).

When I published a post entitled Elizabeth Taylor's Pussy it got over 5,000 hits (it was completely innocent - check out my sidebar on popular posts).

So what's my point? Smut sells.

These trees are only a few feet from my bedroom. If they ever toppled onto the house, I'd be toast.

Last weekend there was a horrendous windstorm. Way after midnight, when I was in bed, I heard several enormous nearby crashes. I figured something happened near the house, but was too lazy to get up.
In the morning I discovered that several large trees were blocking the narrow road that winds past my place. Several workmen (thankfully) arrived and removed them with the aide of chainsaws.
No damage to my property (thankful, again).

It's hunting season! Let the slaying begin!

Yesterday (Friday) there was more gunfire around here than I've ever heard before. Non-stop all afternoon and early evening.

I ventured in the woods for a brief walk (camera in hand) and kept fervently praying that a myopic hunter wouldn't mistake me for Bambi.

Now that the trees are bare, I'm able to see the nearby mountain. Okay, technically it's only a hill. Heck, I've seen bigger boobs when I was in Hollywood.

I used to have a decent view of the neighboring cow pasture, but with all the rain this year everything is overgrown and the pasture is obscured.

Very few leaves are left in the forest

I like this mystical shaft of sunlight.

My El Cheapo digital camera has a ten-second timer. I had to set the timer, put the camera on the porch railing, grab the 25 pound pumpkin, run like hell to the porch swing, sit down and try to look relaxed and pretty. All for you.
It wasn't easy.

SHADOW CATS

Scratch (above) and Bosco (below) on the porch, contemplating their long shadows.

note -

I'm still having lots of trouble leaving comments on blogs that have popup comment windows. It's a computer "glitch".....I'm not in the mood to explain details now.

  1. What beautiful weather you've having, except for the windstorm. There are many big trees around here so I'm also nervous about wind, especially when I hear crashes. I'm eating with my parents so there are three of us. They are in my bubble. It'll be small but delicious since my mom is an excellent cook. I am NOT good with timers!

    1. I'm always worried about trees toppling onto the house, but - in some strange way - the forest serves as protection from the wind (at least I like to think so).
I hope you have a nice Thanksgiving with your parents.

  2. I love the shadow cats!!!! How does anyhow dislike Thanksgiving? It right with Halloween as my favorites holiday. Our Thanksgiving will continue with dinner as always with just the four of us ...so nothing new here. I look forward to my aunt's dinner just about all year. I head home tommorow.

    1. I had planned to just take a quick photo of the cats, and I was really surprised to see how long their shadows were. The photos turned out quite unique.
I'm admittedly envious of your Aunt's wonderful cooking! Have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

  3. I just left a comment...but don't know it went through. Your blog is one of several where they seem to get eaten.

    1. Fortunately it went through. Several people I know are having trouble with comments on Blogger.

  4. I was the evil person who cancelled Thanksgiving here. I did it out of sympathy for the doctors and nurses who have lived in this hell for the last 9 months.

    1. Heck, I think it's best to stay home, be safe, and relax. Have a pleasant Thanksgiving!

  5. It was nice to see the picture of you with that bright orange pumpkin. I hope when you go walking in the woods you either wear safety colors or carry that pumpkin, so the deer slayers won't make a big mistake and think you are a deer, as you are dear to all of us.

Several years ago my Dad saw a beautiful all white deer at a county park where no hunting is allowed. It was at the edge of the woods munching away on some undergrowth branch. During the next deer hunting season, shortly after my son in law had started trying to hunt deer, I was telling him about the white deer at the park. As soon as I finished telling about it, he said he wished he would see one when he was out hunting. He'd shoot it and mount the head on the wall. Mother-in-law that I am, I then told him about the old Indian legend that if a hunter kills a white deer, they will forever more have very bad luck hunting.I don't know if I read that somewhere or if I just made it up on the spot.
He doesn't deer hunt anymore, that only lasted a couple of years. I probably should have kept my mouth shut. He and I still get along fine and I am happy he is family.

    1. I only go walking on my own property and the hunters seem to stay away (I think) but I'm always worried about stray bullets.
I like your white deer story. I've never heard about the Indian legend; but it definitely sounds like it could be authentic.

I'm too much of a coward (sissy?) to be a hunter. I have trouble killing mice...

  6. I am having greasy street tacos with a dozen or more friends for Thanksgiving. That will teach someone! Also one less 25 lb. turkey will be slaughtered for the disinfected table we won't be sitting at. Of course, since we will be eating cow instead there will be one less moo in the world. Oh welp!
Have a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving Jon! And know that you are appreciated! Enjoy the booze! Thank-you for posting! 🌮 🌮 🌮 😜

    1. Greasy street tacos sound just fine to me, and I'm sure the turkeys appreciate it. I'm not sure yet what I'll have for Thanksgiving, but it will be accompanied by homemade wine.

It's reassuring to know I'm appreciated. Many thanks!

  7. Those shadow shots are SO neat! Only second to your selfie with Brother Pumpkin. Chuckling, remembering how excited I was to learn there was such a thing -- then, the reality of trying to achieve a 'natural' look. (Do you ever wonder if there are tech people spying into your phone, watching and laughing?)

If the economy starts to tank like some have predicted, I may have to try my hand at making wine, too. Cheers!

    1. I hadn't initially planned to take shadow shots, but those photos turned out to be unique. I don't like taking selfies - I never look "natural". I'll eventually get the courage to take some with my cell phone.

If the economy tanks, we'll not only be making homemade wine...we'll also be in the forest hunting for our food.

    1. Ever since this new Blogger format came into existence, it seems like everyone is having trouble of one kind or another. I'm glad your comment came through. Hope you and Annie have a great Thanksgiving.

  9. I love that you made the effort to set the timer, run, and lift up that pumpkin! My daughter and her family can’t come for Thanksgiving Due to Covid. My son-in-law has Covid patients coming out of the wazoo in the ICU. I really am not willing to take the chance of getting it from him.

My issue with Blogger is the reading list. It omits some posts, while showing older posts as new. It’s tiresome trying to figure out what posts I’ve already read or try to find recent ones.

    1. It must be extremely stressful to work in an ICU. I often joke about the pandemic, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

I have trouble with the Blogger reading list, too! Some posts do show up late, and sometimes others are completely omitted.

  10. Sounds like a blog post I had been planning about Thanksgiving restrictions. Nice to hear others are feeling the same urge to riot against the nanny state. ( I'll save my revolutionary rant for MY blog) I did listen to the piano video. Sorry about not leaving a post. You certainly play better than I ever did. ( it took me 2 years to "pass" my P2 test.) I used to love playing The piano, but as I got older and my interests changed, THAT is when they decide to throw me into the deep end of the pool of " Practice" and "Scales". By then it was a form of slavery and not "fun" as it might have been back when I was a kid.
I need to work on my home made booze as well. I have plenty of Hops harvested from the Kewash trail. I now only need to learn how to make Beer. Or skip all that and simply make Moonshine from Yeast and Sugar. Yours is such a fun blog to read.

    1. Some of these plague restrictions are completely insane. Much like you, I often get the urge to rant.
My entire life used to be immersed in music. My intense passion for the piano waned when I came to Tennessee - and the movers "lost" most of my treasured music manuscripts, including all of those that belonged to my mother (she was also a pianist). My two pianos are now sitting here, gathering dust (and probably mice).

As for homemade booze, I was really surprised at the results I got from plain ol' yeast and sugar....

    2. Dear Jon, re: gatherings, I have let all relatives (even our own kids) know they must abide by my covid-phobia and celebrate with their own nuclear partners and families. This means we will distance from 10 to 2000 miles. From the back of my mind comes an old 1970's joke that 2000 miles describe another kind of zone, but times change drastically once you're 20. Happy Thanksgiving!

    3. The age of twenty seems such a long distance away that I hardly remember it. Most of my relatives and friends (what's left of them) are thousands, or at least hundreds, of miles away....an uncomfortably safe distance.

As usual, I'll be spending Turkey Day with my cats.
Wishing a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving to you and Norma.

  11. Great post, Jon! As usual, you are right on point. As far as the question of family dinner - well, the DAY that our esteem moron of a State Governor Wolf pays my bills, he can fuck off!! I will NOT wear a mask in my own home, I will NOT limit my own family inside MY OWN home - that rat bastard can go to Hell as far as I am concerned.

One that note, I do wish you a peaceful holiday and btw I loved the pick of you and the cats. Especially the one holding the pumpkin. :)

    1. Governor Wolf is definitely one of the worst (although there are many). This pandemic has encouraged the Democrats to be drunk with power - and the restrictions they're enforcing are completely insane. I doubt if it will ever end.

Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you like the photos. Have a great Thanksgiving!
