LONG RANDOM THOUGHTS ON A SHORT AUTUMN AFTERNOON

I sometimes try to use catchy post titles to attract readers to my blog. It doesn't work. My infantile efforts inevitably nosedive like the Hindenburg.

I took the above photo today. You might remember Mr. Bones from last year. He's one of my annual Halloween props.

Mid-October already. My favorite month is passing more quickly than the showers of falling leaves. Last weekend (the long holiday weekend) was rainy, dreary, and immersed in haunting hillside mists.

Two photos of my misty front "yard". The above was taken with my old El Cheapo camera. The one below was taken with my new cell phone. I don't really see any difference at all. It wasn't a very good day for taking photos because it was bleak, misty, and dark.

The foliage is turning colors rather early this year. Usually they don't peak here in the Tennessee boonies until near Halloween.

I drove to town last Tuesday. Couldn't go on Monday because the bank was closed (Columbus Day). The rain vanished, the sunlight was glorious. I took a few pictures of the front "yard" before embarking on my journey.

I always put "yard" in quotes, because it isn't exactly a yard -- it's a monstrosity of nature.

I stocked up on lots of groceries  and got a few more pumpkins. Pumpkins always enhance my autumnal mood.

I also (finally) bought a slow cooker and a toaster oven.

Toaster ovens sound archaic - but I don't like microwaves. I only use my microwave to reheat things (like a cold cup of coffee). I make a lot of toasted sandwiches, and it's ridiculous to put them in the stove oven. I figured a toater oven would be preferable.

The slow cooker will probably come in handy to make winter meals and soup. The price was right, and there were only a few left.

I'm presently in the process of making apple wine. The fermentation won't be complete for another week or so, and I'm anxious to try it.

So far, I've made concord grape wine (really good)
cranberry wine (really good)
and white grape wine (really crappy, but at least it got me drunk).
Apple wine should be interesting. Life always looks a helluva lot better when in the custody of inebriation.

Apples and pumpkins - among the many delights of the autumn season.

This is undoubtedly one of my most uninteresting blog posts. Lately, I blog just to convince myself I'm still alive.

I try to refrain from writing about my problems , which - during this past year - have become so overwhelming and multitudinous that I'm presently only hanging on by a very thin thread.

Without going into tedious details, I'll only say that my health is deteriorating and life here in the wilderness looks beautiful, but can be alarmingly daunting and surprisingly complicated.

If things don't improve by the end of this year, I'm going to permanently close my blog. I have too many other things to contend with.

I'm not saying this to get sympathy or advice - I'm merely stating brutal facts (facts that can be difficult to face....).

But - on the bright side - I'm really loving autumn and savoring every day. And I'm always keeping busy. There are lots of things I want to do around here.....

.....if only I had the energy and stamina....

  1. We are having a glorious fall here with the leaf color. I use my crockpot all the time and even mentioned it in my post today. I’ve never owned a toaster oven. Can you believe that? What do you use it for?

    1. Fall has really been beautiful here, too. A hard frost is expected tonight, with a chilly weekend ahead.
I've never owned a toaster oven before and haven't yet tried my new one. It is used for smaller items (rather than putting them in a large conventional oven) - like a grilled cheese sandwich, a small pizza, TV dinner, etc.

  2. Savor the rest of October and see how things go. I'm sorry to hear about your health struggles. Writing is great therapy in my opinion. Plus, I like reading!

    1. Writing is definitely great therapy. When I write in this blog, I'm mostly just talking to myself - but I'm admittedly delighted when others enjoy reading my rambles. Thanks for being there!

  3. "Haunting hillside mists" ... what a delicious visual! So glad you indulged yourself in the slow cooker and toaster oven. I don't think we've turned on our oven since February; really a waste of power for just the two of us. I've never heard of apple wine; please let us know how you like it.

PS - I truly hope you'll reconsider closing this blog. Some days it may not feel that way, but you mean a lot to your readers/friends.

    1. You're a very observant reader, Myra, because you always manage to catch my favorite phrases when I write. I haven't tried the slow cooker or the toaster oven yet, but I'm looking forward to tackling both.

The apple wine will probably be similar to hard apple cider. I heard that cinnamon could be added to the recipe - but I didn't use it (next time I will).

Thanks for your vote of confidence regarding my blog.

  4. I love this month too, and agree, it's going by much to quickly. Our foliage is a tad behind I feel...in the mountains it was much more turned already, but here, it's just starting. Took a lovely walk yesterday. I love your pumpkins and MrBones. I love pumpkins and gourds. Nice to see a fellow friend get into the holiday.

Keep the blog...just blog when you feel it. We will be here waiting away. It shouldn't feel like a job to you. Plus, you could just do pictures too!!! A Jon photo blog!!!!! I love your pictures.

    1. The fall foliage here in TN usually doesn't peak until the end of October - but this year it has started early. It's such a gorgeous and inspiring time of year.

I mostly take photos here on my own property and sometimes feel that they are repetitious. I'm glad to know you enjoy them.

  5. I'm still waiting for energy and stamina also. :(
They're predicting 1-5 inches of snow tomorrow. Been in the 20s at night. Winter is arriving before the leaves have turned.
Hang in there. Your new purchases should help make life a tiny bit easier, I hope. :)

    1. I can hardly remember when I had energy and stamina (*sigh*).
Wow!! It's too early in the season for snow! Here in TN we will be getting our first hard frost tonight (Friday) and I'm hoping it won't ruin the colorful foliage.
      Take care and stay warm.
Perhaps you can build a Halloween snowman (lol)

  6. Once again I'm going to try to leave a comment. (Blogger hates me) Even if I can't say anything I do check your blog every day to see if you have posted and always enjoy reading them.
Re: ghosts. I'm not sure if you can get this online but the Travel channel does quite a few shows regarding the paranormal which I thought might be of interest to you.

    1. Your two latest comments have arrived safely! Ironically, I've been having trouble leaving comments on several blogs and can't figure out why. The Blogger gremlins are playing Halloween pranks on us.

I do get the Travel Channel online but haven't watched it in a longtime. I'll definitely check out their paranormal programs.
The History Channel used to have quite a few, too, but I don't know if they still do.

I check your blog daily to see if you've posted anything. I enjoy your photos. I read somewhere that phone cameras are a lot better now than they used to be. I've never figured out how to get photos off the phone and onto the computer.

  8. That is one beautiful monstrosity of nature you've got going on. I often try to figure out how you get to and from your house, though. I always imagine you weed whacking your way out. That in itself might be weird for me since all of my paths are concrete and lead - without obstruction - to the pastrami in the deli. Apple wine sounds so Grateful Dead - ish. Hope it gets you properly wasted if that is what you are seeking! Yay on the toaster oven! I love using my toaster oven for fries and steaks and I am a retired chef. Toaster ovens make a proper bad ass opened faced grilled cheese; the slow cooker of course will make the perfect soup. So happy to hear you have made these two purchases as they will make your kitchen life more enjoyable I think. I really hope you don't quit blogging. It would be heart-breaking to see you go......

    1. My property is so overgrown with massive weeds and brush (from all the rain this year) that I hate to venture outside. I literally have to fight my way to the car, my feet get tangled in thick vines, and I keep slipping on the deep mud. I'd love to see some concrete paths.....

I haven't yet used the toaster oven or slow cooker but am looking forward to it. I've grown tired of making grilled cheeses in a big conventional oven! And it will be great to make soup in the slow cooker.

I thought apple wine would be appropriate for the fall season. I'm looking forward to getting soused with it...

  9. I enjoy your blog and hope you don't decide to just give it up, but when you don't feel like writing for it, just let it go for a while, and pop in every once in a while when the writing mood hits you.
I slowed down so much on my blog. I used to write quite often, but then my knee arthritis and dealing with one knee replacement one year and the other knee replacement the following year, it has been taking me a long time just to get my regular stuff done, and my energy is gone before I write anything, except for a rare rant. Sometimes ranting energizes me. Now that they have changed blogger, I don't know how often I will post anything.

    1. I'm sorry to hear about your knee replacements. That ordeal must really sap your time and energy. Writing is always a great catharsis for me and I'd undoubtedly regret abandoning my blog. I sometimes feel that I'm getting boring and repetitious - and I dislike being depressing - but it's always reassuring to know that others have the patience to read my rambles.

  10. I think the blog is what keeps me sane. I can gripe about stuff and "think" people read it. I sometimes put a humorous spin on it and it makes me chuckle when I red back. In fact, I'm probably the most frequent visitor to my blog and I simply can't get enough of the writer's wit or style. But that is just me.

I actually look forward to your blog posts because it is always fun to read about people with more problems than me. Do it for the Readers! (Without getting too depressing...) We have no Halloween decorations at all. No mums, no pumpkins, no bones. Just neighborhood cats. I guess we look a bit like a Steven King Novel at times. ( In my imagination.. at least.)

    1. You're right - blogging does help maintain my sanity (or what's left of it...). When I write, I'm mostly just talking to myself - - but I'm also admittedly an armchair exhibitionist.I'm delighted when others read my rambles and rants.

I have a habit of buying pumpkins every autumn because they put me in a good Halloween mood. Unfortunately I hate to ruin them by making jack-o-lanterns, but I probably will make at least one this year.

  11. Dear Jon, your blog is a staple read for me. I don't always comment lately because I've been unwell --not virus, just age and mileage. Getting dressed in the morning or taking a crap wears me out, which scares me into panic attacks. I escape to this table to get bpms down and O2 up, and always read your posts. Got a post off on "Trainride of the Enigmas" this evening, so I trust things are looking up. Went to Rite Aid Pharmacy today to collect prescriptions and noticed no decorative Mr. Boneses for sale. They DID have big fake dog skeletons which I found in poor taste. That's all the news I have from California for you. Listen: you take care, stay safe and don't succumb to the virus that wiped out a whole family next door (100 feet away) this past August. You're important to me.

    1. Geo, I'm so sorry to hear about your ongoing physical ailments - and I can fully sympathize with those panic attacks. I always assume that you read my blog even when you can't leave comments. I do the same thing.

I seem to be falling apart physically much sooner than my parents did, and it scares me. It's one unpleasant thing after another (I'm sure you can relate to this). I can't seem to do half the things that I was able to do a year ago. My cousin Nancy is also having a myriad of health problems.

I now always wear a mask when shopping in town.. The number of virus cases are rising here, and if I get it I will be doomed.

My very best to you and Norma always. Big Hugs!

  12. Crock pots are indispensable in my life. It is the best way I know to make soup! I find blogging to be a great comfort when life goes to shit. Writing clarifies things for me. Good luck.

    1. My parents had a crock pot when I was a kid, but I personally have never used one. I'm looking forward to making lots of soup this winter.

Writing is an invaluable way to release pent-up frustrations.
      Thanks for stopping by, Debby!

  13. Enjoyed your autumn pics and the pumpkins are very bright and colorful! I always love looking at everyone's decorations and such - helps put me in a happier mood. I hate microwaves as well and like you I only use them to heat something up in. Have you ever tried th Air Fryer ovens? THEY ARE GREAT! I have the air fryer and the air fryer oven.

    1. I've always disliked microwaves. Everything I've ever cooked in them tasted artificial. I never tried an air fryer but I have heard positive things about them.
I hope you rested up this weekend and are feeling better!

  14. Writing is an outlet for many of us and while not every post can be interesting to everyone, that's not important. To me, what matters is the personal enjoyment and lately I have enjoyed sharing our day trips with background info and photos. That said I always enjoy your informative posts, especially ones connected with film stars of years ago and your childhood (and adult) stories. I may not read every blog post, every day because of time constraints, but sit down once or twice a week to do catch-ups. Hopefully, you will continue blogging, even if on an occasional basis.

Congrats on your 2 new purchases which will really be time savers, especially the crock pot. I'm with you on the microwave avoidance. They insisted on putting one in the apt kitchen when renovations were done, even though we declined. It's now only used for reheating coffee or boiling water in a hurry. I've thought of using it for additional kitchen storage, but then would have to take things out when we did use it.

    1. Dorothy, your blog posts are always extremely interesting and informative. I thoroughly enjoyed the recent ones with the scarecrow people.

Unfortunately I recently haven't been able to leave comments on your blog, due to some mysterious computer glitch. The problem stems from my computer - not your blog - and I'm presently trying to find a solution.

I'm sure I'll get good use out of the crock pot and toaster oven. I have never liked microwaves.

  15. Forgot to add that Mr Bones looked good next to those pumpkins. Do you plan to carve them and use the pumpkin for anything? We didn't get any this year, but this weekend's homemade pumpkin pie (canned pumpkin) was a dessert treat. BTW butternut squash soup is a good one for the crockpot. Also, the cell phone camera did a good job as did your "El Cheapo camera.
