POR UNA CABEZA

Por una cabeza...."by a head"..... A Spanish horse racing term for winning, or losing narrowly. It's also a rather chauvinistic comparison of chasing women to horse racing.

The composer of this famous Tango, Carlos Gardel (1890 - 1935), was somewhat of a faux womanizer. He never chased as many as he claimed.

The very popular song writer, singer, and actor claimed he was Argentine but in fact he was born in France. However, his Latin persuasion is partially true. When he was two years old, his unmarried mother left France and moved to Buenos Aires. Carlos spoke Spanish rather than French.

He never married and kept his private life under wrap. In 1920, while performing in Buenos Aires, he met Isabel del Valle an actfess and they had a long relationship.

Gardel died on 24 June,1935, in an airplane crash in Columbia. He was forty-four.

Por una cabeza is the pinnacle of the Argentine tango. In my biased opinion, I think it's the greatest tango ever written.

I fell in love with it when I was a young musician, and performed it frequently when I was a pianist in after hour bars and cafes in Hollywood.

I don't remember when I made this video, but it must be over a decade ago.
