HOME (SOMEWHERE)

I suppose my home is (was) Southern California, because I was raised there and lived there over thirty years.

My parents moved six times while they were in California. I always felt unsettled as a child. As soon as I got used to a place, we'd move to another.

I left California when I was in my early thirties. I had regrets, but I saw the proverbial handwriting on the wall. Southern California was once a magnificent paradise. That's how I remember it as a child.

Over the years it changed drastically, all for the worst. The intrigue, the abience, the glorious golden age completely tarnished. I'd never go back.

I spent numerous years in the Missouri Ozarks. A hauntingly intriguing place. I made my living as a freelance writer there. Got into a relationship that turned into a disaster......I could elaborate, but it would take about 300 pages...

Wound up in the wilds of West Texas. Why? My retired parents moved there. After my father died, I took care of my mother for four years until she passed away. Devastating, heartbreaking memories.

My thoughts about Texas? The nicest thing I can say is that it is totally unbearable. My apologies to Lone Star fanatics. It's just not my style. Too many bitter memories. I couldn't leave soon enough.

Why Tennessee? I'd never been there, knew nothing about it. I had a few relatives there.

I was seeking a quiet, peaceful, rural life. And I found it. A tiny "shack" on two acres. At the edge of a forest. In the middle of nowhere. My neighbors are cattle and cows. I like that.

It's a frugal existence, far below poverty level. I've seen the " high life" in Hollywood and Beverly Hills. I hobnobbed with the privileged. I don't miss it. I crave simplicity.

I had a big house in Texas. Four bedrooms, three baths, all walk-in closets. A dining room with a fireplace. A huge kitchen with two refrigerators, a pantry, more cabinets and counterspace that you'd ever need.

My humble abode here in the wilderness is small. Three bedrooms (two are very small) and two baths. The kitchen is minuscule. I have no space to put anything, but I don't care.

Cost of living? I paid cash for the TN house. In Texas my annual property taxes were over $4,000.

Here in TN my annual property taxes are $150.

Yes, you heard me right. And the value of my property increased last year.

So, I had a peaceful and private existence. I had no regrets.

Until.....I got seriously ill in 2023. This literally destroyed everything. My privacy and freedom completely vanished. The past two years have been a nightmarish complexity of hospitals, rehab centers, doctors, nurses, tests, medications. I have lost my health, independence,  precious time, and dignity.

My rural home is abandoned and left alone. Local people who live in my area have been periodically checking the place, but I haven't heard from anyone lately.

I feel completely trapped here in the confinement of rehab. My biggest fear is that I'll never see my home again......

Jon,    intensely apprehensive

This is the rural road that goes past my property

That's the crude gravel driveway, leading out from the front "yard"

The humble living room

These tall trees are only a few feet from my bedroom.

In the summer and autumn the nearby hills are completely blocked from the trees. They can only be seen in winter and early spring.

My greatest joy was walking in the back "yard" forest in autumn. These photos were taken near the house.

The  equisite  beauty of nature makes my heart sing.

  1. Beautiful location and pictures. Being old and helpless sucks! We're not quite there yet but it could happen anytime.

    1. I never dreamed I would ever be physically incapacitated. The feeling of helplessness is very frightening.

  8. What a bittersweet recap, Jon. Sometimes I shake my head at those places I found attractive/important at one time or another. Seasons.
I, too, pray you'll be returning to your haven in the country.

    1. After living in Calif. and TX, I was yearning to be where there are a change of seasons. It's really a satisfying feeling (except, perhaps, the frigid winters)😯

  9. The beauty of simplicity.
Being a Californian we moved a lot too.
Orange 63 St Joes Hospital , Anaheim 63-64, Fresno 64-65, Orange 65-71, Palm Springs 71-72, Orange 72-89,Tustin 90-16 and Riverside 16 on. (Orange County got too expensive) Being renters we moved a total of 18 times ! Anaheim, Fresno and Palm Springs were in motels that granma managed. (The Rip Van Winkel, Ken-Jean and Marquis motels)
Finally settled in one place we hope !
Despite all the moving the family got to see the Beatles in Hollywood 64 and The Rolling Stones in Fresno 65 ! And so many stories to tell of crazy neighbors landlords and tenants, certain family members and celebrity sitings. And the adventures and drawbacks of being the new kid in school.
Hope you get back to your house that is a home :)

    1. We lived in Anaheim from 63 - 65, and my parents moved back there around 71. We lived in Glendora, Covina, Pomona, Corona, Anaheim twice. I had a close friend in Tustin. I was best man at his wedding.
The Beatles and the Rolling Stones - - that's great!
I never saw the Stones, but one time I saw their luggage at the L.A. Airport ( I'm not kidding).

    2. When we saw the Stones in Fresno only a few thousand showed up. When everyone thought they could get autographs after the show, the Stone’s were whisked away in an armored truck. Then someone mentioned the Stones were on their way to the airport for their next concert.
So off to the airport we went !
The Stones were there for a couple of hours, talked to their fans (us and a couple of dozen people) and signed autographs for everyone. My cousin had all the group sign her Stone’s album, and she has it to this day. Just like her signed Beatle’s albums, spoiled brat! :)

    3. Wow, they were the good ol' days when you could actually meet famous people. Nowadays you probably wouldn't have a chance to get near them. I'll bet those signed albums are worth a fortune.

    4. She has a guest room filled with her rock n roll memorabilia from the concerts she attended in the 60’s. When the Beatles performed in Hollywood her dad had our aunt film it on a home movie camera. They filmed part of the trip going up the 5 Fwy to LA, people in other cars would smile and flash their tickets to see the Beatles one card had the sign Beatles or Bust in the window :) At the Hollywood Bowl they were seated way at the back, so my aunt went to an area where KHJ, KTLA and KCOP had their tv cameras set up and got a great view of the concert.
Years later my cousin’s parents moved and the film was lost !
Her father put it in in the wrong box and off to the city dump it went :( -Rj
