FAREWELL SEPTEMBER

There's nothing more annoying than a blogger who blogs despite having absolutely nothing to say.

Actually, there are thousands of things more annoying - - but I figured it was a good opening for this post.

September and October are my favorite months - a perfect time of year. Unfortunately, September flew by without much notice. I've been too busy recovering from my rotten summer and desperately trying to convince myself that things are improving. Which they seem to be.

The header photo for this post was taken when I lived in Texas. It seems an appropriate  tribute for the threshold of October.

I love this time of year because it reflects the essence of who I am - I have an autumnal soul: mellow, sentimental, melancholy, bittersweet.

September was unseasonably warm but there were a few recently cool days. Two nights ago I had to close the bedroom window and put an extra cover on the bed.

I've been making a halfhearted attempt at doing some fall housecleaning but my motivation is nearly non-existent.
After living here for nearly four years, the place is still a haphazard mess - mostly because it's small and I have nowhere to put things.

I almost never post photos of my abode because...well, quite frankly, it's a dump.
Against my better judgement, here are a few:

My antique desk is between the two windows and one of my pianos is at the far end of the room.

Here's another view of the living room. The antique cabinet with the vase (on the left) used to be in my bedroom when I lived in Texas.
The mattress on the futon no longer fits, because the movers broke the futon frame when I moved to TN. I just had to prop it up as best I could.

This is what the futon used to look like, when I lived in Texas (the movers also "lost" the lamp on the right side of the photo).

This was my living room in Texas. I left the sofa and love seat there for the people who bought the house (and I'm still kicking my ass for doing it)......
but the white leather was difficult to keep clean and was cold and uncomfortable to sit on.
I plan to eventually buy a new sofa.

  1. Your home reminds me of many here in New Hope. My God....how you would love New Hope. It has your soul written all over it. Just imagine if you lived here we'd meet for drinks all the time! I did my seasonal decorating last week too. Although, it's still warm here. My ass drove to the beach yesterday.

    1. All of your posts about the area where you live are wonderful. It's a gorgeous place with an incredible amount of things to see and do. I'm sure I'd love it there.
(but good Gawd - another move would kill me!)

  2. It does not look like a dump at all! The move before this last one I had movers who broke a large bookcase, scratched or gouged almost every piece of furniture I owned, broke a lot of kitchen stuff, dislodged the glass a door on a cabinet that I can't get back in place, broke a lamp...I think that's all I can remember off the top of my head. They also tried to charge me twice as much as they quoted and took me to court. But I had pictures of everything they did and I won in court. Seems so long ago now--was in 2005.

Fall is my favorite time of year, too, but we barely had one. We've had freeze warnings the past few nights. Wasn't that long ago that we literally went from a high of 93 to 48 the next day. Been jacket weather ever since. We skipped sweater weather this year, I think--LOL!

The white sofas look like they would be hard to keep clean and leather can be cold to sit on. You'll find something one day that you like, I hope. :)

    1. Thanks for your vote of confidence, Rita. I suppose it's not really a dump - but it's MUCH different from my huge house in TX. Well, I wanted to downsize, and I did....(reluctantly). I plan to get some new furniture and do some interior painting as soon as possible.

It's a shame what the movers did to your possessions - but I'm glad you won it court. I chose a supposedly "reputable" mover from Lubbock, TX - but they turned out to only be "pimps" for other movers.

It's only about 1,000 miles from TX to Tennessee, but they changed movers THREE different times (THREE different moving companies) before delivering my stuff. They took way over two months to deliver my stuff, claiming that it couldn't be done during the Christmas holiday. And they wound up losing an enormous amount of my things.

On top of everything - - between shipping and moving costs, they charged me nearly $10,000 (!!!!!!) and I'm not kidding. It upset me so much that I still lose sleep over it.
I didn't get any moving insurance....and I waited too long to take them to court.

    2. That is so horrible. I can imagine you having nightmares still. :( :(

    3. I meant to say they charged me $10,000 for moving and STORAGE costs.

  3. Jon, I must be going blind because your house always looks so stylish to me? Oh, and I'm a big fan of pumpkins: I always stop and admire them when I go to the market in October :-)

P.S. Sorry if this is a double post - I got distracted by a sudden telephone call. October is my favorite month, so I give your wonderful post 5 stars...

    1. Well, it's a great relief (and compliment) to know that someone thinks my place looks stylish. Thanks, Dylan!

I love pumpkins a lot and always buy at least one every October. I had a garden the first year I lived in Texas and grew about twenty pumpkins, but it was EXTREMELY difficult to do with the drought and rotten soil there.
Gardening is too much trouble - - it's easier to just buy them.

  4. Your header photo is 'wow' worthy, Jon! The pumpkins and apples look so shiny, almost artificial.

Thank you for inviting us into your home. I must say, the rocker looks inviting; the room cozy. (More so I think, than the white in Texas.) I LOVE that painting over the futon; and you may remember I'm gaga over your antique desk.

PS - October is my 2nd favorite month … behind November.

    1. That header photo is one of my favorites. Texas (admittedly) has much better produce than Tennessee does.....or perhaps I'm just living in the wrong area?

I have two of those rocking chairs. I now keep one of them in the dining/kitchen area.
That painting above the futon was my Mom's favorite and it really is beautiful. I bought it at an auction but don't know much about it. It was supposedly painted in the 1930's by someone whose surname was Lewis.

  5. Jon,
I think you have a perfectly lovely home. Among your other talents, you have a talent for interior decorating also. Very nice.

    1. Hey, Ron, I really appreciate that. I plan to buy some new furniture and do some interior painting in the not-too-distant future.
I hope you had a great time in Canada (I'm behind in reading blogs).

  7. Thanks!! Your valued opinion (and that of my other readers) have convinced me that it's not a dump - which makes me feel better. I suppose I'm just used to the big house I had in TX.
But - just between you and me - I prefer the smaller one that I now have.

  8. Hi Jon - let me repeat what your readers have already stated ... your home is not a dump in any way. Quite the contrary, since your home looks very cozy, organized, and nicely decorated.

We had some snow in higher elevations already, so it won't be long before we're white again. I love October with all the fall colors, pumpkins, apples, and all those weird shaped gourds, or whatever they're called. Oh, and we have our Thanksgiving on October 8th, which is your Columbus Day ( whatever that is.)

Thanks for sharing a peek into your home. Take care !

    1. This small house is so different from my Texas one, that when I came here I just "threw" everything together without much thought - hoping that it would look halfway decent. I suppose I didn't do a bad job - but I still want to make some improvements.

I had forgotten that your Canadian Thanksgiving isn't in November. Our Columbus Day used to traditionally be on the 12th, but they changed it so that it always occurs on a Monday - to give everyone an "extended" weekend three-day holiday.
I have a hard time keeping up with the changes.

Take care, and enjoy the beauty of autumn (before the snow comes).

  10. Jon, your house is nice! From your previous descriptions I imagined some type of falling apart hovel with dirt floors! So happy that you are on the path to feeling better.♥️Susan

    1. Susan, I was actually afraid that my dire descriptions of this house would make people think it's worse than it really is. It's probably a good thing that I posted some photos!

  11. Thanks for the peek inside your house. You may not be happy with it because it's smaller than what you had before, but no way is it a dump. Your wooden floor and furniture are beautiful... especially that desk. You've got a real flair for decorating, cowboy. The leather furniture you left behind looks good, but WE "had" some nice leather furniture, too. Two very nice recliners with matching ottomans. Spent more for those two darned chairs than we spent to decorate our whole darned house when we got married. You should see those chairs now. Evi-damned-dently, our cats like to use them as scratching posts MUCH more than they do their actual scratching posts. They look beyond awful, the same as my desk chair. Never again will we buy leather furniture. I'd much rather have our cats.

    1. I can relate to this! My cat Scratch (aptly named) used to love scratching the leather sofa and love seat. I tried putting covers over them but nothing worked. And I had a nice kitty scratching post but she never even looked at it.

I now TRY to have furniture that's scratch-proof, but it sure isn't easy.
Bosco and Scruffy aren't as bad as Scratch - but Bosco does like to sharpen his claws on the carpet in my bedroom.

  12. I think your living room looks charming and cultured. I hope you enjoy October. I think the sofa is well left behind in Texas if it was uncomfortable and didn't please you. Life is already too full of that stuff as it is!!!!!

  13. I'm actually glad that I left the sofa and love seat behind. It's time to get something more comfortable. So far October is unseasonably warm and really lovely. I'm enjoying it a lot.
