WELCOME, OCTOBER

Trash bags.
I forgot to buy trash bags.

I made the harrowing, perilous, seemingly endless journey to town yesterday - and in the chaotic frenzy of grocery shopping I forgot to buy desperately-needed large plastic garbage bags.

This probably doesn't seem like a big deal, but when you live 500 miles from town (slight exaggeration) it's a huge crisis. I sure as hell don't want to drive back.

Last summer I was completely out of money and subsequently out of food. If it wasn't for the merciful kindness of my cousin Nancy I would have starved to death.

Now I'm (miraculously) back on track and have money again. So yesterday I made the journey to civilization and bought a lot of much-needed supplies.

The only redeeming factor of my trek to town was the beautiful weather and lovely scenery. October is a glorious time of year.

I happened to bring my El Cheapo digital camera. It's nearly impossible to stop anywhere on the narrow, winding road but I did manage to pull over a few times and snapped some photos without getting out of the car.

There are lots of rocky cliffs (at least that's what I call them) just outside of town. In the winter they're covered with icicles.
This close-up photo doesn't do them justice.

The foliage is starting to wither slightly but there's no autumn color yet. It will be spectacular towards the end of the month.

This little old wooden church seems to be abandoned (at least I've never seen anybody by it).

A quaint little valley dotted with some bales of hay.

  1. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful pictures. Same kind of scenery that is in the mountains of western North Carolina, near the Tennessee border where my father was born and grew up until he was ten years old. I love that mountain country. Could never live there though because of the rampant homophobia but still a beautiful area of our country.

    1. It really is a beautiful area, Ron, and it would be a great place in which to grow up. At this point in my life, I enjoy being a country hermit.

  2. Soooo happy to hear you're regaining your moxie … and vittles, too! I'll admit, I'm a tad bit envious of your surroundings. I especially like the olden church building. More, please?

PS - That photo of Scratch and the pumpkin is precious!

    1. I'm still having some problems, Myra, but at least now I'm not destitude. I finally have some peace of mind.
I wish I was able to take more photos when driving to town. Some of the scenery is spectacular. I'll try to take more pics when the trees turn colors.

That photo of Scratch with the pumpkin was taken in Texas - and the pumpkin was from my garden.

  3. Hi Jon - I'm so glad you're back on track with money in hand for those supply runs to town. We always forget something when we shop, don't we ?

The scenery is stunning that's for sure. Great pictures ! There's no six lane freeways to contend with - only the peaceful countryside. That's a big win win.

I hope October continues delivering you good weather. Enjoy !

    1. Helga, I always write detailed shopping lists but by the time I get to town I either forget about them or lose them. Perhaps I should write them in ink on the back of my hands....

The October weather has been unseasonably warm - almost like Texas - but I'm enjoying it (especially when I think about the upcoming long, cold winter).

    1. I always seem to forget the most important things. And writing shopping lists never helps because I either lose them or forget about them.
I would suspect that I'm getting senile - but I was the same way twenty years ago.

  5. Gorgeous pictures tootes!!!! Well, I have finally embraced autumn, but it is still warm here and our foliage looks much like yours still. With all the rain of late, it may affect the vibrancy of the color this season, not sure yet.

    1. I'm hoping that it will be a rainless autumn here in TN, but that's too much to ask. Right now I'm just enjoying this wonderful warm weather.
