Another photo of Bosco in my bedroom window, taken yesterday.
The last day of October -
out of breath, shrugging indifferently, not caring that it passed so quickly that I hardly had time to embrace it's fleeting autumnal beauty.
The color is gone, the golden warmth, the intoxicating magic. On this final day October leaves with a colorless, damp, chilly, dismal mist. A dank, indifferent, monochromatic day that echoes with nothing but the promise of a dreaded winter.
Is my poetic ramble annoying?
It is an apt observation that helps keep me reasonably sane.
It's Halloween. Trick or treaters will not be annoying me. There's no chance in the distant realms of hell that anybody would ever find this place.
The only annoyance I'll have on Halloween night is the haunting howl of coyotes, the lamenting hoots of the owls, and the silent echoes of isolation. The forest, of course, is populated with spirits and ghosts.
So what will I be doing in my purgatory of isolation?
I started baking again. I haven't baked in a very long time, since I live alone, but I recently decided that's a necessity. Instead of driving a zillion miles to town for a loaf of bread, I decided to bake my own. I make a lot of my own stuff now - including tortillas.
This afternoon I made my Halloween feast, which includes pizza and a chocolate brownie cake. I'm thinking about baking some cookies.
I also have apple cider and popcorn.
I make the pizza from scratch, including the dough. I didn't have any of the toppings that I wanted so I used onions, sausage, and olives. It's delicious!
Today is extremely dreary and colorless. It was useless to venture outside, so I took these two photos from the front and back porches.
Two of my Halloween videos, which I think I made last year (my memory is fading.....)

Well, I think your opening picture with Bosco is the ultimate Halloween Picture. I will miss the feeling of October when it's gone in a few hours.
ReplyDeleteAutumn is the best season but it always seems to be the shortest season. October dwindled much too soon. Looking out that window is Bosco's favorite pastime.
DeleteThere’s nothing “wrong” with your Halloween celebration, Jon. Pizza Brownies, cider and popcorn would go good with a movie too. Our movie choice tonight was Beetlejuice. As for making your own bread and pizza dough, I do the same because it’s far better than store bought, excluding a pizza place, and we can pick our own toppings like you did. Like yourself, I too am sorry that October went away too fast.
ReplyDeleteI never realized how much better it is to make bread and other things from scratch - rather than buying the junk they have at the store. I'll really miss October - - but November is a lovely month, too.

ReplyDeleteParanormal John
Hey, John - you picked one of my favorite songs! I've never heard Nancy Wilson sing it, but she is superb! Thanks for the link.
DeleteOh my goodness! Paired with the audio, those images in video #2 both captivated and repelled me. (Like a train wreck, one wants to look away but can't.)
ReplyDeleteYour Halloween menu sounds wonderful. I'll pass on the brownies, but ask for a second piece of pizza. We've not ever made it from scratch, but buy a simple frozen pizza and decorated it with liberal amounts of sausage, cheese, pepperoni, etc., etc., etc.
Those old photos and Halloween costumes are really creepy! My second video is admittedly disturbing. I never thought of making my own pizza from scratch, but now I'm hooked. It's easier than I thought. On my first try I left the pizza in the oven too long and it was annoyingly "crispy" (burned?) - but now I've mastered the technique.
DeleteDoes not look colorless to me! Your baking efforts look great. Yummy! We don't get any kids here ever. No excuse for me to by candy--LOL! ;)
ReplyDeleteCandy has become so expensive that I'd rather eat it than give it away. I'm a greedy goblin.
DeleteLove the seasonal plates and cups. Pot luck pizza toppings are the best! Such odd combinations and somehow they always taste great. Like no one ever thought of putting those items on a pizza topping before. But that is the beauty of the dish... Anything goes! No rules. Enjoy November! And that extra hour of sleep.
ReplyDeleteYou're right - - almost any topping on pizza can be surprisingly good. November is a lovely month, but the prospect of upcoming winter scares the jeeters out of me.
DeleteJon,
ReplyDeleteYou make your own pizza dough? I'm impressed! I used to bake but I've lost my taste for baked goods. I don't know why, it's just gone. I do like to make my own potato salad which I think I will do now. By the way, I always love seeing pictures of your wooded surroundings. Also so pretty.
