WALK IN THE COLD WINDY WOODS

I'm still furious with Blogger because my new post (saved as a draft) mysteriously disappeared. These infuriating Blogger "glitches" are seemingly endless. I suppose I should simply attribute it to the mischievous Halloween gremlins.

It's presently afternoon here in rural Tennessee and the temperature is only 38 degrees (Fahrenheit).  Last night it dropped to 23 degrees and I was forced to enter my (dreaded) Winter Mode:
Get out the space heaters, put the electric blanket on the bed, worry about the water pipes freezing.
Winter is arriving too soon......

Yesterday (Monday) was sunny and very cool - - in the 40s with a brisk wind. I decided to grab my ancient El Cheapo camera and make a brief trek in the woods.

I was completely stunned at how drastically the forest has changed in the past year. All of the paths that were so familiar to me are now strewn with trees that were toppled in storms (some of those trees are only a few feet from my house). Everything is a haphazard mess - - overgrown and nearly impassable.

I climbed over obstinate tree limbs, ripped through sharp thorn bushes, stumbled over thick vines, slipped on wet moss. The beautiful forest that I love wasn't exactly a pleasure - - it was a daunting challenge.

Anyway, I managed to take photos - some of which I'll share here.

All of these pictures were taken on my property
(I threw that in to impress you......*smile*)

October is in glorious splendor

This is one of the toppled trees at the entrance to the forest - - very near my house.

A trio of tall trees

More fallen trees

Despite storm damage, the beauty of the forest still exists

Back home -
two trees in my front "yard"

Views from the front porch yesterday afternoon

I'm going to post this quickly - before Blogger makes it disappear!

                                    Cheers, Jon

  1. Fallen tees are the natural beauty of the woods. I love seeing the untouched areas and you live within some. You just need somebody to mow a path to your door--LOL! :)

    1. Rita, mowing a path to my door would require a tractor, a plow, a dozen field hands, and a divine miracle (lol)

  2. Your photos look like something out of a magazine spread! Please be careful not to twist an ankle while navigating, okay?
We're supposed to be back in the 80's by week's end -- want me to huff and puff and blow some your direction?

    1. I almost got lost in the tangle of woods - and my feet got hopelessly entangled in some vines. I almost thought I'd have to call 911 on my cell phone and send for the Jaws of Life.
I'm not sure I want to 80s in October, but I'll gladly send you some of our frost.

  3. OMG!!!!!Those three pictures in a row near the bottom 3,4,5 from the bottom of the post...are ABSOLUTELY STUNNING pictures in clarity and color. I love the washed-out blue sky against the fall foliage colors. I dare say a wonderful greeting card. Those three pictures made me happy.

    1. Glad to know some of these photos made you happy! I initially didn't think any of the photos would be good - but I was pleasantly surprised at how they turned out.

  4. Hey hey! Glad to see you posting. Fall is a happy time. No bugs mostly. But the chill air can be a problem. Good for sleeping though... as long as you have warm blankets. And some really great beef stew or Chili!

    1. The best part about the cold weather is that it keeps the bugs away. A week ago there was an influx of stink bugs and I found one on my bed!
Beef stew, chili, and soup would be fine with me. Fall inspires me to cook more.

  6. OMG Jon, these new pics are seriously GORGEOUS! I mean it! May I "borrow" one by chance for my blog cover?

I am apprehensive about our winter weather this year - I HATE winter with a passion but I so LOVE fall!

    1. Feel free to use any of my photos, Kim. I love autumn more than anything, but I'm DREADING winter - - especially in this damp and drafty house.

  7. Yeah for your not giving up, Jon, and defying the blogger gremlins. It truly is a jungle out there and it’s in your backyard. The tall tree shots and the aqua sky with multicolored foliage were wonderful images. Glad you were able to get out, despite the hazards, and capture them to share with us. Temps in your area seem a bit cooler then now in Nashua.

  10. Ooh amazing pictures.... how I'd love to own all those trees, each one a great big centre of life.... I hope none of the tall ones are TOO near your property!

    1. Several of those toppled trees landed dangerously close to my house (one was only a few feet away from my bedroom). I'm hoping that no more majestic trees will succumb to nature's wrath. The foliage colors are unusually beautiful this year.

  11. Just beautiful pics, Jon. Thank you for posting. Being so isolated, does it ever get scary/creepy out there? You know me....really into ghost stores and hauntings. I'd be sleeping with all the lights on and a Rottweiler (or two) by my side! LOL!

    1. John, when I first moved here rural life was completely new to me and I was scared witless for about two weeks. My imagination was rampant. I finally got used to the blessed silence and privacy and I presently have few fears. I enjoy hearing the coyotes and owls late at night (but I seldom venture outside after dark.
Ironically, the lock on my front door was installed improperly (before I lived here) and seldom locks!! Some day I'll have to fix it..............

I love comments. Go ahead and leave one - I won't bite. But make sure you have a rabies shot just in case.
