WILDFLOWER

Well, we finally made it to May - and I think the six month Tennessee winter is over (is that a slight exaggeration?). The ice floes are melting and the penguins have apparently left to spend the summer in northern Canada.

There was a light frost a few nights ago and I still have heavy blankets on the bed. And I drank hot chocolate last night.
But today was sunny and 78 degrees (that's Fahrenheit, for those of you in outer Mongolia). I'm very cautiously optimistic.....

So, in honor of May Day - I'm offering wildflowers - - in the form of a piano rag, composed by Clarence Williams (1893-1965) and first published in 1916.

Composer Clarence Williams

I recorded this about twenty years ago, without ever hearing anyone else play it. Later, when I heard several versions by other pianists I was surprised that they all (including Clarence Williams himself) play it much faster than I do.

My initial interpretative intuition  is that this is a sweet, simple, tender piece of music - and playing it very quickly does it an injustice. In fact, if I ever decided to record it again, I'd probably play it just as slow, but with more "feeling" and tenderness.

One more thing:
As usual, I used the software Audacity to transfer my old recording to an mp3 file. For some reason the mp3 file contained a lot of VERY annoying skips and jumps that aren't in my original recording.

So, I decided to transfer the mp3 file to a WAV file (which usually improves the audio quality). Unfortunately there's only a slight improvement. My over-sensitive musical ear STILL hears some slight skips and jumps - and the final chord of the song is rudely cut short.

This probably has no meaning to others, but when it comes to my recordings I am a perfectionist.

I was initially going to use photos of wildflowers for my video - but decided to use lovely Victorian and Edwardian ladies instead.

As always, video is best viewed full-screen.

  1. What a great song for the First of may. I love that show so thank you for the introduction. We too are pass winter returning. It's been in the 80's here and I hear 91 degrees for Thursday.

Nothing like going from winter to summer, and turtlenecks to speedos!!!!!!!!

    1. Wow - 91 degrees by Thursday? Summer hasn't wasted any time arriving in your area. It's only going to be about 80 here on Thursday, but I'll gladly take it.

Those unfortunate Victorian ladies....I couldn't imagine wearing those dresses and hats in the summer.

  2. That's a cheery little number. I quite liked it and it's perfect for May ... Tra la, it's May ! The photos you've chosen for your musical recording are lovely. The fashions along with the pretty flowers ... so nice to look at.

I'm glad your weather has improved ... finally, winters over and done with.

    1. I was initially going to do a May Day dance, but decided it was much easier just to make a video (*smile*).
When I said that the penguins will go to northern Canada for the summer, I'm thinking that perhaps they should go farther north....

Anyway, it's wonderful to finally see green trees and flowers (wildflowers are abundant around here).

  3. This was a treat ... both your audio and the accompanying images. (Dang, I wish those enormous hats were in vogue again!)
Preferred tempo? I'm thinking instrumentals aren't that much different than fine art (paintings). Who cares what's good, or 'right.' One should savor that which makes his/her heart swell. Jus' saying ...

    1. Musically speaking, I always rely on my intuition and it never fails me. I wish my intuition was as trustworthy in other aspects of my life....

It's so wonderful and refreshing to see women actually looking feminine and lovely - as they were meant to be..... something is largely lacking in the genders nowadays. Of course, having to wear corsets and all that cumbersome finery undoubtedly wasn't easy.

  4. The demure, lovely ladies go perfectly with the music. Having heard your version I can't imagine a faster version--LOL! :)

  5. I was surprised and disappointed when I heard faster versions of this piece. It really ruins the music.

I tried to find photos of vintage ladies with a flower theme, and it was surprisingly easy. I especially like the color-tinted photos. My paternal grandfather was a photographer and he often hand-tinted his photos.

    1. I always enjoy your unique style of expressing yourself. Sorry the video didn't work.
You can try this direct link to YouTube (but I'm not certain if that will work, either) My YouTube channel is called JayveeSonata.

  7. We just left Tennessee yesterday, and I was shocked at the early morning temperatures while we were there. BRRRR! And the trees! If I only saw them and had to guess what month it was, I would've guessed February. Lots of naked trees still.

Love your video. (Today, my sound card chooses to cooperate. Other days? Not so much.) Anyhow, the music reminds me of the soundtrack from a silent movie.

    1. This was the coldest Tennessee winter I ever experienced. There was frost a few nights ago - - but today (Wednesday) was near 80 degrees and the forest trees are quickly turning green. So I am hopeful!

  8. I thoroughly enjoyed this song. And the video. I have to say I was delighted by the notion the penguins are in route to canada.

I only hope the penguins took winter with them when they left Tennessee!!!

  9. Jon, I distinctly remember commenting positively on this post and your relaxed interpretation of "Wildflower Rag", but it has not appeared. This usually happens when I'm distracted and don't press the right buttons in the correct sequence. This occurs in other areas of my life but I won't go into them. But now my plumbing is fixed --I dug out the last and worst leak at midnight Wednesday (yes, I am the hero of my own life and that station does not belong to the 4 plumbers for whom I have now financed swimming pools and European vacations (I believe that is a paraphrase of page one of David Copperfield). All for the past 2 nights of hot showers, worth it. My panic subsides and appreciation for you calming music is well received. Thanks.

    1. Geo - I just checked my file for all the comments on this post and couldn't find any previous one from you. You probably didn't press the right button.

I've been pressing wrong buttons my entire life - it's one of the many aspects of my existence that I desperately try to forget.

I'm truly delighted that your plumbing problems are resolved and your showers are hot again.....even though the luxury was obtained at such a high price (well, at least you didn't have to sell your firstborn...)

I like the fact that you're the hero of your own life. True heroism can most often be found within ourselves.

    2. Jon, missing you and the great music you play big time. You really are one of the good guys. Just wanted to drop by and say a heartfelt hello.

    3. Dylan, it's great to hear from you. I often wonder how you're doing and I always read your blog posts. It's too bad you can't allow comments - but I FULLY understand. The haters are inevitably lurking and waiting.....

I'm always very careful about what I write - for fear that the trolls will suddenly appear with their venom.

I love comments. Go ahead and leave one - I won't bite. But make sure you have a rabies shot just in case.
