MIDNIGHT SNACK

I never eat breakfast or lunch. My main meal (dinner? supper?) is consumed in mid-afternoon or sometimes very early evening.....

.....but, I usually "snack" late at night - most often after midnight. One of the great luxuries of living alone is that I can do exactly what I want. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Tonight I indulged in a big cup of Earl Grey tea, a toasted sandwich, and cake.

It's a cool, quiet night - interrupted only by the nearby owls and distant coyotes and/or wild dogs. About an hour ago there were gunshots - quite near my property - but they didn't last long.

It's painfully obvious that there's no specific purpose for this blog post.
A perfect time to share some (boring??) photos.

My midnight mug of Earl Grey Tea. I like large cups of very strong tea - with milk and sugar (or evaporated milk and honey)
When I was a very small child, my paternal Hungarian grandmother used to make tea for me like this.  That's how I've always liked it ever since.

I (finally) decided to use the dinnerware that I bought for my parents when they first moved to Odessa (TX). It's been packed away for a long time.
This is a hibiscus pattern.

Tonight I made toasted sandwiches with turkey and Swiss cheese. My microwave still isn't working, so I made them in the oven.
I accidentally turned on BROIL instead of OFF, but fortunately they didn't burn.

Have you ever had a Dr. Pepper cake? It's made with real Dr. Pepper.
So how did I like it?
Let's just say that I wouldn't request to have it with my last meal before I was being executed.

It's okay.......but very sweet...and too Dr. Peppery....

In a previous post I mentioned that a hummingbird periodically comes and looks in my kitchen window.

I was finally able to grab the camera and take a quick picture. It's not a good shot, but I didn't want to get too close and scare him.

Still lots of butterflies around, but difficult to photograph them.

Another sunset photo that I took a few evenings ago.

  1. Well I, for one, always enjoy your photos. Now I love my husband, but when you mentioned "the luxuries of living alone", I indulged in a brief, wistful state of mind. Dr. Pepper cake? I used to be addicted to (Diet) Dr. Pepper, but no. That doesn't sound tempting. Here's a link to something I saw on another blog this morning: Earl Gray London Fog cake. https://www.notquitenigella.com/2016/02/23/earl-grey-london-fog-cake/

    1. I checked out the link. The cake looks fantastic and I love Earl Grey tea - but I'm wondering if the distinctive bergamot tea taste would be too potent for a cake?? Kinda like Dr. Pepper cake....(*smile*)

I've always believed that people who were "only children" (like you and I) value their solitude and privacy more than others. We never had to share or compromise with siblings. That was a great luxury....

  2. Same here with the living alone. ;) I love this post. Just full of little daily life stuff. :) Glad you're using the hibiscus dinnerware. I'd pass on the Dr. Pepper cake because I am not a fan in the first place. But your toasted sandwich looks delicious. :)

    1. Living alone is wonderful! I have several sets of good dishes that I never use, so thought I might as well drag them out and use them. When I lived in TX I always used paper plates.
I never liked Dr. Pepper but was curious to know what the cake tasted like. I'd never buy it again....

  3. Jon, these are absolutely beautiful photos. I'm impressed and so is Norma. I don't judge hers by camera expense (wheww!she uses her iphone) but by sensitivity and respect for the feral disposition of the subjects --not the Dr. Pepper cakes, but the wilder things. Haven't commented lately because Norma's mom had to get settled in a care-home and her brother had 7 heart attacks in the past 2 weeks. I get very little of her company and less of my own, but still read and enjoy your blog-posts --usually late at night.

    1. Geo, I'm so sorry to hear about the difficult times Norma and you have presently been going through.I know from personal experience how extremely mentally and physically draining it can be.
It is heartbreaking having to deal with the welfare of an elderly parent - - and the serious illness of a sibling. I'm sending positive thoughts and prayers.

My "El Cheapo" camera is an old Kodak Easy Share that I bought on sale at Walmart when I first moved to Texas. The photo quality leaves a lot to be desired but I still like it.
Anyway, take care and thanks for keeping in touch.

  4. When I read Midnight snack, I thought, I wonder if Jon had a midnight tryst!!!!!!

Now I can't lie, I'm the opposite of you. My favorite meal is breakfast. I could eat the foods for all meals... Im pretty sure I'm addicted to bacon and homefries...but the meal I usually pass up on is lunch.

  5. I love bacon and home fries. Breakfast is supposedly the most important meal of the day - which probably explains why I feel half dead most of the time.
Lunch is VERY seldom on my agenda -
but I'm always "up" for midnight snacks...and trysts.

  6. Some great captures - love the dinnerware, and the photo of butterfly. We only get white ones where I live, I would love to see one that displayed some colour.

    1. There are lots of colorful butterflies in Texas and Tennessee - especially the orange Monarchs. I haven't seen any white ones in a long time.
The hibiscus dinnerware is rather unusual - - very tropical.

  7. That's exactly how my maternal grandmother (German) used to prepare tea for me when I was a young girl. With a cereal bowl under the cup, instead of a saucer. Then she'd pour the tea into the bowl and let me sip from it... while eating rye bread with butter and grape jelly. Great memories.

We rarely skip meals. Especially breakfast. (You'd probably feel all-around better if you ate something in the morning... maybe a poached egg on toast or a bowl of cereal...?)

I enjoy my own company just fine, but I'm grateful that I don't live alone. I'd probably do much worse than skip meals.

    1. It seems that European grandmothers were all quite similar. My grandmother - like yours - always served the tea with toast, butter, and jelly.

I love living alone and value my privacy, but now that I'm getting older I do worry a lot about medical emergencies and other things that could happen here in the wilderness.

    1. I know a lot more women who like Dr. Pepper than men. Maybe it's a gender thing?? Actually, I don't hate it - but it wasn't very good in a cake.

I recently had a 7-Up cake which was quite good.
The tropical dinnerware is a nice "theme" for the summer.

  9. The dinner plate is quite colorful. Never seen that before. I kinda like it. I live alone, and one day my cousin said that I must be terribly lonely...Uh, No. Is something wrong with me? So I asked my sister who is a social worker and she said No, that is a sign of an emotionally healthy person...whew! ha! I do have daycare kids here M-F so not alone during the days and my kids come home different weekends too.
I think even a quick breakfast for you when you get up would be helpful for you. No, I would not eat a Dr. Pepper cake. Not a fan of it just drinking it, shudder!

    1. I've lived an active life with lots of people, but now that I'm getting older I truly value solitude and privacy. I am never bored and I enjoy my own company.

I mostly bought the Dr. Pepper cake out of curiosity. It was "okay"....but I'd never get another one...

    2. I should probably have a light breakfast. It's better than nothing.

  10. This sounds pretty nice, (except for the Dr Pepper cake) (yeuch, why would anyone buy that? I suppose if they can bear drinking the stuff without throwing up, which I can't). That is beautiful and unusual tableware! I don't think I have ever seen anything like it here, I am wondering what the make is. If I didn't eat breakfast or lunch, I'd be picking at snacks all evening, and half the night. I always think that our ancestors must not have eaten 3 meals a day when they were cave-dwelling and evolving into the marvel that is the modern human race. (?) So it is probably fine to only have one meal a day.

I love comments. Go ahead and leave one - I won't bite. But make sure you have a rabies shot just in case.
