VISUALS

I've been going through my photo files which contain all the pictures that I've taken since I came to Tennessee (five years ago).

I was surprised to find way over a thousand. All taken with my ancient El Cheapo digital camera (it's a Kodak Easy Share, which I bought on sale when I first moved to Texas).

Since the vast majority of photos that I post on this blog are taken in my own back yard, I figured I'll share a few that were taken outside of my private realm of existence.

The Alvin C. York State Park is not very far from where I live. Sergeant York was one of the most decorated Army soldiers in World War I.
(I just discovered that he was born on my birth date - December 13th).
This is the old gristmill in the park.

I love this peaceful little waterfall.

There are forests everywhere around here, but also lovely little valleys sandwiched in between.

There's a lot of nice scenery on my long drive to town, but it's nearly impossible to take photos because there are very few places to pull over. The winding road is narrow and I'm afraid I'd risk going over a cliff or getting pulverized by a logging truck.

One of the landmarks I always pass is this old barn.....

.....and this little church, which I think is still in use.

The autumn foliage is spectacular along the drive.

The icicles on the cliffs are amazing

    1. I'm so glad you enjoyed these, Louise. I have so many photos that it's difficult to choose. I'm intrigued by that old barn - and there's an old abandoned house near it.

  2. The waterfalls reminds me of one I saw in the Fingerlakes in NY state and the icicles on the ledges could be straight out of the Cuyahoga Valley National a Park near me. Lovely, bucolic scenery. I especially like the gristmill. It could be a painting.

    1. Those icicles are amazing and there are so many of them on the cliffs around here. Unfortunately they're located in areas where it's very difficult to take photos.
The gristmill would make a great painting - the red paint is striking.

  3. Thanks, Jon, for this mostly visuals post. Those fall colors were spectacular and I also liked that waterfall. Your el cheapo digital camera and the person using it did a great job. I recall a quote: "It's not what look at that matters, it's what you see" Henry David Thoreau. Looking forward already to future posts of the area around where you live.

    1. I've been using that camera for so very long that it feels like an old friend. There are so many opportunities to take good photos when I'm driving to town, but unfortunately there are very few places to stop on the narrow road. Many of those photos were taken from my car window!

I've never heard that Thoreau quote, but I like it!

  4. More, more, more! Everything looks so homey and (dare I say it?) welcoming. Seeing that little road which winds by your house I can't help but wonder (about) your first thoughts when you visited the property. Hard to believe it's been 5 years!

    1. My cousin first drove me out to see the property, before I contacted the realtor. It was located so far from town that I said "Are we still in Tennessee?" But the price was right.....and I liked the four-legged neighbors.

  5. When you see these pictures, it doesn't look half bad. At least if you look, you can see some beauty. And I have yet fine that El Cheapo brand camera of which you talk about!

    1. There is indeed some beauty here, but my photos don't always do it justice.
I have no doubt that the old Kodak Easy Share camera is now completely obsolete.

    1. Tennessee is a beautiful state, Donna, and I like it here - - but, just between you and me, I felt more at home in the Missouri Ozarks.

    1. I love my neighbors, too, Rita. I always smile when I hear the cows. It's a lot more soothing than hearing people.
BTW - I also always smile when I see your Bird Cafe.

  8. Hi Jon ... first off, Happy New Year to you. We took some time off to go to my favorite ski resort for a bit This post is great ! It's always nice to view scenery from other places. I especially like that waterfall. It looks like a pleasant spot to hang out and have a nice picnic.

That little road which winds past your place looks inviting with all those trees. I look forward to seeing more.

I look forward to any future pictures you may post. Tennessee

    1. Happy New Year to you, too, Helga! I think a skiing expedition would be a nice way to start the new year. I was hoping we'd get some snow, but so far it's only rain. Seemingly endless rain.

The State Park - where the waterfall is - is a great place to visit because hardly any people are ever there. It's usually deserted.

Glad you enjoyed the photos. I'll have more in my next post. I always enjoy running around with my El Cheapo camera - taking pictures of anything.

BTW - Dylan has been having computer trouble, which is why I haven't heard from him.

  9. Beautiful photographs. I loved seeing the red barn and the old fashioned little white church. Beautiful waterfall, and dripping icicle cliff.

You live in a lovely area, but I bet you have to make your grocery list out carefully and check it twice. It seems like it might be a long drive back into town if you forgot anything.

    1. This is really a beautiful area, but I HATE (and dread) the long drive to town. There have been many times when I forgot to buy important things, but didn't have to courage to drive back. I usually only go grocery shopping about twice a month.
And I always seem to forget things even when I have a list.

  10. I used a Kodak EasyShare at one time, and got some great photos with it. Now I'm one of those lazy cell phone photographers. (and it shows!) Love these beautiful pictures!!

    1. I presently don't have a cell phone. I recently tried two new ones and neither could pick up a signal out here. I'll probably (reluctantly) have to try a more expensive one.
But I still like my old Easy Share camera.
      Glad you like the photos!
