THIRTEENTH

 Thirteen? Unlucky?
I don't know. It's a matter of opinion.

I've always detested birthday celebrations, even when I was a child. They're annoying and unnecessary. While cake, candles, and balloons might be cute when you're seven, it's a travesty when you're 105.

I don't know how the heck old I am. I stopped counting when I was forty. Or was it fifty?

One thing I'm proud of: I'm a Sagittarius. They're special people. Talented. Good looking. Witty. Charming.
I just made that up, but would like to believe it's true...

I've been reading about Sagittarian traits.

They're optimistic with jovial personalities.
Hahahahahahaha
I'm so intensely pessimistic that I often depress myself. And I'm about as jovial as a Gregorian chant.

Some of the other Sagittarius traits are fairly apt:

A wanderer, free spirit, adventurer.

I have never been completely satisfied or content. I'm internally and externally restless. I've always been a free spirit. (very often, too free....) I used to be an adventurer - until it completely wore me out.

Can not commit to long-term relationships.

Extremely true. The prospect of anything "long-term" scares me.

Brutally honest.

I am a realist and most of my opinions are far removed from mainstream. I often say things that others are secretly thinking but don't have the courage to say.

Knack for language and skills in writing.

I occasionally have a knack for putting words together. I started out as a journalist when I was sixteen. Later became a freelance writer. But music was my foremost passion.

Can be an inspiring and creative duo with a Leo.

Very true. A Leo, without a doubt, was the greatest love of my life. The perfect love. Death is the cruel interruption that parted us.

Well, enough of Sagittarius lore.
How about some very early Christmas photos? I've posted all of these before, but just pretend that you've never seen them.

I  was two years old on this photo (almost three) but looked older because I was tall. That winter coat resembles a straight jacket...

Christmas, when I was one year old.

The house where we lived when I was one year old. My father took this photo on Christmas Eve.

Christmas with two of my cousins, Maryann and Dianne (sisters). I have no clue how old I was.

I look kind of cranky - - but, then, I'm always cranky in the morning.

  1. Adorable vintage Christmas photos. But good Lord, how can we be old enough for them to be called vintage? Happy birthday and all that jazz!

  2. Happy Birthday, Jon! What an entertaining take on your Sign. My son's birthday was yesterday, so I can help by draw some comparisons. Maybe I'll borrow this idea for my own birthday next Spring.
In all seriousness, I hope your (fiscal) new year is full of pleasant surprises.

PS - "I'm about as jovial as a Gregorian chant." Mister, I nearly sit out my egg nog! Yes, it's only 9-something in the morning and I'm having egg nog. (Baptist style)

  3. Optimistic...nope. But the rest of it sounds pretty close.
My sister is a Saggitarius and is definitely no optimist, either--LOL!
I guess we're supposed to look at more than just the sun sign. Have you ever had your horoscope done?
Cute pics. Fun to see them again. :)

  4. I loved looking at these old photos. (not that YOU'RE old!) I remember begging my mom for tinsel for the tree. She hated it, for good reason. You do look much older than you are in that picture! I always looked younger, being on the short side. :)

  5. Every year you post that last one, and every year I still love seeing it!!!!! That face just sums it up. I have many friends who are Sags. Im a Scorpio. We won't go there.

  7. Happy birthday, Jon. (I too was born on the 13th day of a month, although a warmer time of year) I certainly wish you all the best and hope that the upcoming year won't present so many annoying challenges.

  8. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JON! Yes, my husband is also a Sag (December 4th) and he is a restless spirit but kind and caring even after 26 years of living together, he is still somewhat of an engma to me at times. A smartass, but kind - pessimistic yet an optimist ... etc., etc.

Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos with us (and no, I for one have not seen these before so no pretending that I didn't lol). You were an adorable little boy and if I may say so, you are still a very good-looking man. :)

    Take care!

    1. Oh yes, and one more thing, you do resemble Ralphie from "A Christmas Story" on the one pic. Too cute!

  9. Great photos! Those trees with tinsel! I remember them. Yes I am old enough to have had the same or similar trees. As a licensed astrologer I can say your Sagittarius generalizations are true. And as a neighborly Capricorn I say all winter signs rule the earth - and I am not talking about the star of the season - who is actually a Virgo. It is okay. God knows people lie about his Son all of the time. My own experience with Sagittarians is that they are crazy stubborn and must be very careful, at times, not to become easily bored with themselves and others. But of course you know this about yourself already.
Post Script: You look a lot like your mother in the first photo. But the gnarl in the last photo - priceless!

  10. Those pictures brought back memories for me. We used to have a live tree ( back when they were affordable) and drape "icicles" on them... Tinsel that would make a mess in the Livingroom. Also, the snow that was falling... reminded me of the snow storm of 1976! ( in Michigan) huge flakes, deep snow, Dad had to go Shopping for the neighbors because we were the only ones with a 4 Wheel drive vehicle ( before they were the "norm" like today...

  11. Belated Happy Birthday, Jon, and the traits you fall under seem to fit you at least in my opinion, and maybe yours as well. Thanks for sharing the vintage holiday pictures. I wish there were a few more in my family photos, but I can only recall a couple and might publish before the holiday. The one of younwith Santa reminded me of A Christmas Story which we watched recently.

  12. Dear Jon, what a handsome toddler you were! And your cousins were lovely. My birthday is this week and I too remember those winter coats that deprived us of the use of our arms. An enjoyable, articulate post. Happy Birthday to you, to us!

  13. I used to love birthdays as a child. Pity I don't feel quite the same excitement now! Those are cute pictures - the one of your house in the snow is atmospheric though it doesn't look like California! You were such an amazingly cute toddler, bet your mother was so proud going around with you holding her hand!!

    1. Jenny, that house was in New Jersey. We didn't move to California until I was six.

I love comments. Go ahead and leave one - I won't bite. But make sure you have a rabies shot just in case.
