JON DOES DEBUSSY

I'm soused on homemade wine and shouldn't be allowed to blog. Acute inebriation is the only way I can tolerate life and get through these incredibly intolerable days......

Every time I post a piano video, everybody runs for the EXIT and leaves me in the dust.

What the hell should I do to get some attention and respect? Strip naked, stand on my head, and sing Pagliacci ??
Don't smirk. I just might do it.

Let's look at this with some semblance of reasonable plausibility:
How many Tennessee hillbilly pauper hermits do you know who can play Debussy?

I rest my case.

I found this old VHS rehearsal tape and just posted it on YouTube. It was recorded in San Angelo, TX. (the audio is bad - the camera was too close to the piano).

Arabesque #1 in E major, by Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918).

As much as I like Debussy's music, performing it has never my forte. And - to be absolutely blunt - I've never liked this Arabesque. In fact, I almost hate it. It is an early Debussy composition, which has none of the intoxicating intricacies that are prevalent in his later piano music.

You've already seen my interpretation of Debussy's Clair de lune, but some of you forgot to applaud - so I've decided to inflict it upon you again.

Two Debussy compositions for the price of one.
What more could you ask for?

Cheers, Jon

  3. I can't get the visual of you standing on your head, undressed, singing to get our attention. Frankly that is best imagery i've had all day. Loved the piano piece of Debussey. Didn't run for the hills. listened intently. It waslovely Jon.

    1. I think it's best to expunge that visual from your mind. It could be dangerous....
Many thanks for your kind words!

  4. Funny fellow! I really envy your passion (and talent). I was a reluctant student of both the piano and classical music. It would be nice to discover what it is I'm passionate about someday.

    1. Believe it or not, in my early years I hated practicing the piano and did as little as possible. If I had worked hard, I would have been dangerous. Inner passions can come to fruition at any time in our lives. Grandma Moses didn't start painting seriously until she was 78.

  5. As amusing as the image you presented, Jon, stripped naked, standing on your head and singing, I much preferred these two musical pieces. And, yes count myself as one of that small but dedicated group. we do not run for the exit. Both Debussy selections were enjoyed.

    1. I'm sure that if I were naked and singing, EVERYBODY would be running for the exits. It's reassuring to know that you're among the discerning few who appreciate my enigmatic existence. Many thanks!

  6. Dear Jon, "Strip naked, stand on my head, and sing Pagliacci". By strange coincidence, this was why I was asked to leave Westminster Presbyterian Church in 1966. I joined the Unitarians but they just sang praises of Timothy Leary and I did not remain one for long. Sorry to go off subject here, but your gentle interpretation of Clair de lune soothes both mind and spirit.

    1. I think churches need more "stand on your head" entertainment and less politics.
I hope you and Norma are doing well and enjoying the wonders of spring.

I'm completely miserable - - but at least the temperature has warmed up.
