Yesterday morning I was rudely awakened by a nurse's aide shouting "I gotta swab the shit outta their noses!"
This was a sweet and subtle reference to the covid nose swabbing test.
Thought I was next.
Thankfully I wasn't swabbed by a hostile, irate woman.
(smile inserted here)
Many of the female workers here remind me of Brunhilde and her gang, in Wagner's opera Die Walkure.
Wearing viking helmets with horns, brass boobs, holding spears.....screeching loudly.
Well, this a rather kind representation of Brunhilde.
This is much more like it.
I noticed that every one of the female workers here are covered with multiple tattoos. This doesn't bother me, but......what if it's some sort of secret cult? Perhaps they're planning to use me as a sacrifice to Lucifer or something?
Fertile imaginations go rampant when given enough time in isolation.
Things are changing around here in covid quarantine.
The early morning workers treat me as if I have the bubonic plague. They come in wearing plastic space suit gowns and masks. When I finish breakfast, they take the tray - - dishes, silverwear, cups, EVERYTHING - - and dump it in the specially designed trash bin.
NO, I am not jesting. Here's the trash bin..
After the morning workers leave, the day shift treats me more like a normal human being. They enter my room without masks or gowns....and show no fear of my presence.
Go figure.
I've been faithfully trying to do all of the in-bed leg excercises that the physical therapist showed me, but extreme pain has been impeding my efforts.
The knee on my left leg is swelling again. Worst of all is the unbelievably bad "wound" on my left ankle. It started out long ago as a pressure wound, and became a massive lesion.
It now has deepened to the bone. Worst of all, it is located directly on a nerve. The pain is beyond excruciating. And even worse than that, it's located on the back of my ankle - - very difficult to see.
The wound care people have to keep lifting my left leg with the bad knee. Between the ankle wound and my swollen knee, the pain is beyond endurance.
This is no exaggeration. I have to fight from passing out. When wound care leaves, I'm in intense pain for hours. The pain meds are worthless.
Sorry if this is getting boring. Am I telling too much?
Let's move on to gastronomical delights.
The food here is appalling. Remember the "meal" they gave us on New Year's Eve?
Well, every meal is a mystery surprise. This (below) is the dinner they served last night.
Looks good! Let's all put on our thinking caps and try to guess what it might be.
I suppose I should be grateful for what I have, but what I have isn't exactly what I want to have to be grateful for.
That looks suspiciously like the same ham they had on New Year's Eve.
When I was in Signature at Jamestown, I ordered food from the Walmart deli. That's because Walmart was a mile away.
Here in Gainesboro, the nearest Walmart is thirty miles away. I can't order perishable food, only shipped items - - like cookies, candy, peanut butter....etc.
Well
should I tell more, or let you ponder the fascinating information that I devulged in this post?
Methinks I should let you ponder, dear friends.
Jon ❤️

Wow, that trash bin looks suspiciously like a Sharps container.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry you're experiencing these pain levels -- again. We had to see a Wound Care specialist on Tuesday for a 'hole' atop Tom's spine. It's not painful, but they don't seem overly concerned about its failure to heal. (Small blessings.)
Please keep posting -- we'll keep reading ... and praying.
It could be a Sharps container. The "hole" on Tom's spine is scary. Sounds like the wound on my ankle. It doesn't heal. One of the nurses is putting in a report to try some other medications. I can't tolerate the pain.
DeleteI'll keep posting. Prayers are welcomed. 💙
thecontemplativecat here. You have the gist of a story here. It is so incredible and believable. Anyone who has read your posts are amazing at your stamina. I will continue to pray for you...I promise.
ReplyDeleteI always imagine what I'm going through as a story, and I try to describe it creatively - - but every word is true. I learned to write this way when I was a young journalist student.
DeleteI truly marvel at my stamina.
Thank you. ❤️
Jon, I know you’re in a horrible situation, but it’s encouraging to see you’ve still got a sense of humor. This post made me laugh (sorry?) but I feel devastated for you at the same time. Hope you continue to manage somehow. -from a long time reader in the Pacific Northwest
ReplyDeleteI've had one helluva life, and somehow I always manage to use humor to get me through bad times. It's a saving grace. I'm glad I made you laugh! Thank you for your comment. I truly appreciate it. 💙
DeleteStill here, Jon, and good that you are as well despite the unending pain, deplorable food and questionable nursing care.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're here Dorothy. I am really in absolute misery, but writing about it helps me to survive. I'll continue as best as I can.

Please email or post your current postal address again, Jon, thanks.

Who knows? I suppose I could try anything. It's good to hear from you, Lisa. Hopefully you're having some peaceful and blessed days. Big hugs to you and the kitties. ❤️😸😺
DeleteOh Lord! That red contamination barrel. It brought back memories of working again. Not pleasant memories, either. I'm sorry to hear the saga continues. The food is beyond and we're not talking 5-star cuisine beyond. I think I'd be living on the non-perishable food from Wal-Mart. The ankle wound sounds concerning. Nutrition and healing. Yep, it's a combination that's important and what they're serving you there could kill rather than heal.
ReplyDeleteAs always, sending the best. I think the ankle will heal before the food/care improves.
Paranormal John
They removed the contamination barrel yesterday. They no longer throw my breakfast tray away. They are starting to be more lenient, which is encouraging. The ankle "wound" is extremely painful, and hopefully (?) it will eventually heal.
DeleteThe food is truly disgusting and I'm losing a lot of weight because I can't tolerate it. They font give us milk or nutrition drinks. I just ordered cookies and peanut butter from Walmart today. I'll try lots of peanut butter.
Always good to hear from you, John. 😺
Won't, not font
DeleteGod Jon! That food looks appalling. And I hate ham slices. I am so thankful I can prepare my own meals. That's just one more reason I don't want to end up in a glorified prison like you're in now. I am so sorry you're there. Someday, hopefully you can return to your peaceful mountain home.
ReplyDeleteRon
Ron, the food was bad at Signature, but it is absolutely disgusting here. I often have no clue what it is. I have to literally force myself to try it. I'm going to order more things from Walmart, or I'll perish.
DeleteTake care, and be thankful you're home.
My husband just had a stent insertion (guess that’s what you call it) into his heart with complications! He spent five days in the hospital and the food was so bad he could not eat it (of course he didn’t have much of an appetite)! He lost ten lbs. while there. I can only imagine how much you’ve lost over the year!
ReplyDeleteTry to think of a lot of non-perishable food you can order. Make a long list and eat as much as you can!! lol
Little cans of fruit juice
Dried fruit
Little Debbie Donuts lol
Walnuts
Graham crackers & peanut butter
Bananas
Chips & bean dip
M & M’s
Okay, well here’s hoping you get out of that place real soon! Think Spring!!
Pat
I'm so sorry to hear what your husband is going through. That's really scary. Sending prayers for his recovery.
DeleteThe food is so appalling that I can't even look at it. During the past year when I was at Signature, and now here, I lost about thirty lbs.
Thanks for your suggestions for food. I'm going to order what I can from Walmart.
Thanks, Pat
Christ, that crap they call food ?!
ReplyDeleteDoctors are always telling us to eat healthy foods and yet hospitals put out the worst processed food imaginable.
Fresh fruit, steamed vegetables and roast chicken or pork or broiled fish should be served by law to ensure the health of patients.
Your best bet for healthy snacks are mixed nuts, plain yogurt with fresh fruit, and low carb whole grain bread with nut butter.

I give up on what that mound is that could be a Corn laden Biscuit! I don't know how they expect Healing and any Health with fare like that Fear Factor Food they're Serving?! And the Amazonian Nurses, frightening!
