A dark, dank, dismal day. The only bright side is that it stopped raining.....at least for a few hours. The last day of October is always profoundly melancholy for me. My favorite month is gone, the glorious peak of autumn is waning, and the long merciless winter awaits.
In December I'll be another year older and it makes me shudder.
In a rare moment of lucidity and semi-optimism, I pulled on my work boots, grabbed my El Cheapo camera, and wandered into the woods. My plan was to document Halloween in a glorious photo-shoot of autumn leaves.
Unfortunately, it was dark, misty, and so wet and muddy that I kept slipping and sliding. Many of the trees were rudely stripped of foliage by recent winds. It wasn't an amicable photo day.
But I managed to snap a few pictures, some of which I'll post here.
So what will I be doing on this Halloween - besides sliding and slipping? I usually like to have have pizza on All Hallows Eve, but since my oven is kaput, I opted for a pork sirloin roast in the slow cooker (it's almost ready now). I also have apple cider, pumpkin pie, and apples with caramel topping. And hazelnut coffee and Irish tea.
Heck, it's almost a party.
I certainly don't have to worry about dealing with trick or treaters. My rural abode is so remote and obscured by a rampant jungle of brush that nobody could find it.
I made the video Halloween Dance last year (I think). Thought it was apropos for today.

Happy haunting, Jon
What time is din -din? I'll be right there!!!! As always your pictures warm my soul with autumn. It's been fairly warm here, I have yet put my heat on, but I'm very hot blooded even though I'm a hot house flower. Our leaves are just starting to turn. I wish Id seen that video to include in my music for today...I like the old feel to it. Now the stove. Do you have a Home Depot or the like? I just got a new stove last spring at home depot for $395. Not bad. flat top, nice box oven and self cleaning. For two years my oven didn't work, except when on broil...I was to lazy to get someone in to look at it with a busy schedule. So when I was laid off I got a lot down around the house including that bitch of old stove. I bet you could find a new one on a good sale price. Thank heavens you got a slow cooker...otherwise you may be out back cooking over a open fire Jon.
ReplyDeleteBut...enjoy the delights of the Hallows Day.
I still love seeing your photos, Jon. I, too, get a bit sad when fall is over. Winter always sucks! lol
ReplyDeleteWe do not get any trick or treaters here either Most of my neighbors are retired so ... that is that. I am fine with it though. My sister Robin and her hubby get A LOT of them every year however.
Your dinner looks awesomely delicious!!
And, yes I do beleive it was last year because I remember this cool video! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThat video never fails to cheer. Pity it's only socially appropriate once each year. Thanks for risking life and limb to capture these images; the desert dwellers don't know what they're missing! Say, have you any roast left over?
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious and the woods are beautifuly wild. :)
ReplyDeleteYour Halloween sounded peaceful to me, Jon. We also spent it home with a crockpot dinner (pulled pork) but sadly no pumpkin pie dessert. Thanks for braving the elements to capture the waning colors. It was sad to bid October farewell. Welcome to November, let the holiday madness commence, way too soon for me.
