LAMENT ON A NOVEMBER AFTERNOON

I can't seem to let October go. I'm still lamenting the passing of my favorite month. I'm still in a Halloween mode, immersed in the apex of the autumnal equinox.

November is here. Most people have rudely discarded their withering jack-o-lanterns and are now gearing up for the holiday onslaught. They're dusting off their Christmas ornaments and Nativity mangers (are mangers still legal?). They're deciding what type of enhancing plague mask they'll be wearing to the upcoming Christmas parties (is Christmas still legal?).
They'll be getting their 39th Booster Plague Shot, just to be safe.

Am I being sarcastic?
Nope. I wouldn't even think of it.

I'm too busy savoring what's left of the autumn foliage. The turning of the leaves was initially sporadic and rather reluctant here in the wilds of Tennessee. The past few days have brought a glorious burst of color in the surrounding forest.

Today I had planned to walk in the woods (again) but didn't feel up to it. By late afternoon, in the golden waning sunlight, my backyard forest looked beautiful. I grabbed my camera and took some fairly decent photos without having to leave the back porch.

Glimpses of my world on a November day:

Pumpkins left over from October. I should have cleaned that mirror - but, heck, I'm not Martha Stewart.

  1. I am sorry to have November already a week old and time to reset the clocks this weekend. You still have some nice autumn colors from your front porch views, Jon. And I am happy to have seen some remaining here as well. I am NOT in any rush for decorations other than scarecrows and pumpkins until the end of November and the start of December. Unfortunately retailers do not agree and the decorations are out and the holiday music has started.

    1. I always like to stay in an autumn mood until Thanksgiving. The foliage here in TN was rather disappointing in October, but for the past few days there was a beautiful burst of color. It always looks best on (rare) sunny days. I can never resist taking photos - - even though my old digital camera seems to be waning.

  2. Your woods are so beautiful right now. If I lived there, I'd be spending as much time out on your porch in the midst of all of that bright leafy stained glass light as possible.

    1. It truly does look like stained glass - most especially in the glorious sunshine. I really feel fortunate living so close to the woods. I never have to far to enjoy it.

  3. I feel exactly the way you do, Jon. I WANT OCTOBER back! Our leaves barely had any color this year and are now dropping off the trees like flies. The weather has been nasty cold and windy TOO SOON for my liking as I HATE the winter months!!

And today is daylight savings time - RIDICULOUS CRAP. Arizonia just voted to do away with it - we ALL should. It truly serves no purposes what-so-ever. Lucky them ...

You autumn pics of your backyard are so lovely and beautiful! Brought a smile to my face this morning.

    1. October definitely went too quickly, and I hardly had time to enjoy it, being side-tracked with all my problems. I'm glad that the foliage finally turned colorful in November - - but the cold weather has set in early and I dread it.

I absolutely DESPISE daylight savings time - it's completely worthless, not to mention annoying. I refuse to set my clocks back.

  4. Wow ... frame-worthy! At least, enlarged and made into canvases to gaze upon during those gawd-awful sticky summer months. That's why I made my screen saver an Austrian winter wonderland.

    2. My humble photos are indeed frame-worthy, and the best part is that the impressive woodland backdrop is right outside my door. Despite all of my problems (and there are MANY) I'm still glad to be surrounded by nature, rather than glaring neighbors. And I never want to live in a year-round hot climate again.

  5. The Color is still on a few trees, but I think the Peek here in Iowa was last week. 65 degrees today! And we were stuck inside working.... (Not even an evening walk) The time change was supposed to give me an extra hour of sleep . Instead it took an hour away from my evening light. And it is predicted to be cold this week. I can hardly wait for that.... grrr. Like you, I miss autumn and October. ok, technically Autumn is still here, but the cold will change that quick as November gears up in Iowa. Enjoy it while it lasts!

    1. The November temperatures are annoyingly erratic. The first few days were freezing. Today the temp soared to 70 degrees, and cold weather is supposed to return in a few days. The foliage colors have finally peaked, after a slow start in October. I refused to turn my clocks back!
