Wicked winds stripped the trees of their autumnal glory and left them naked and shivering in astonished disbelief.
Last week was mild and balmy - in the 70s (Fahrenheit) with blessed bursts of golden sunshine. Then, on Friday (yesterday) the rains came and drenched every semblance of hope. Last night the temperature dropped drastically. I bundled up in bed in a cocoon of blankets and Bosco joined me.
A restless pack of roaming coyotes shrieked and howled outside the window. Later, the sleepless owls sung a post-midnight lament.
Somewhere between dreams and dawn, loud gunshots woke me up.
Hunters?
Or bloodthirsty intruders?
Heck. Who knows.
Today (Saturday, I think) it's raw, misty, and cold. Presently in mid-afternoon it's 33 degrees (Fahrenheit).
My supplies are getting very low. I desperately need to make the long journey to town, but - - with no word of exaggeration - - I'd rather starve to death than go. I have so very many physical ailments that I no longer care about anything. This isolated sojourn in the wilderness will eventually kill me.
And nobody cares.......
I'm presently out of milk, bread, eggs, onions, potatoes, and all frozen food - but I'm making due with what I have. I've got plenty of evaporated milk, which I love.
Been cooking and baking a lot. Last night I made biscuits from scratch. Today I ate them with butter and blueberry jam. And tea, of course.
Within the past week I baked bread, cranberry bread, and cookies.
I found a can of oysters, so I made an oyster stew. Later I found a can of chicken meat, which made a wonderful soup with corn and noodles. Canned chicken meat is expensive, but I thought it was surprisingly good.
I'll be ordering supplies from Walmart, as usual. They usually ship within two days. Unfortunately FedEx delivered my last two orders to the wrong address - - I had to contact them and explain exactly where I'm located.
This place is so remote that I doubt if even God could find it.
I stumbled outside today and took a few photos from the safety of the front and back porches.
The golden autumn leaves are gone.
Only a damp, misty, sullen forest dreamscape exists.
The dreary, dismal front "yard"
(is it a yard?? I wonder.....)
Now that the trees are bare, the surrounding hills can be seen.
The bleak back "yard", where trees were ravaged and toppled from storms.
Notice a few colored leaves in the lower part of the photo.
Cold sunset
Cheers, Jon
Good thing the price of everything is coming down. According to everyone in the news and political landscape. I wonder if I'm living on the same planet as the people on the television. Anyway,... the cold has arrived here as well and it is something I am not looking forward to. Stay warm. Biscuits and jam and tea sounds good. Makes you sound sophisticated and "English". A Wee Bit of culture in the wilderness.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been to the supermarket in a month. I sure hope the prices are coming down. The last time I went shopping, I could hardly afford to buy eggs.
DeleteI have a difficult time adjusting to the sudden cold weather after it was warm for so long.
I enjoy bringing smidgens of sophistication to the wilderness. It confuses the possums, snakes, and coyotes.
The wind and sleet took out the leaves over here, too. It is 15 degrees. In the next ten days we are expecting highs of 6 to 25. I am bundled up, too. Stay warm, my friend, and I hope they can deliver to the right address!!
ReplyDeleteGood grief - your frigid temperatures make Tennessee sound like a tropical paradise (,,,,almost). I have a very hard time adjusting to cold weather.
DeleteTake care, and warm hugs to Allie.
Again, your first paragraph has stirred my senses. "Naked and shivering in astonished disbelief." Wow.
ReplyDeleteAside from FedEx's missing your 'X' I'm glad you've opted for delivery. Your make-do menus sound tasty .....simple pleasures!
My on-line deliveries always keep me satisfied until I get the courage to drive to town. I just hope FedEx can find me this time.....
DeleteI really enjoy having homemade soup during the cold weather. I just throw any available ingredients together in a pot - and it usually turns out great.
You are right, Jon, it does look like a bleak landscape outside your door, much different the fall colors a couple of weeks ago and definitely coup and comfort food weather. Soup made with anything available is better than something from a can hands down. Temps have finally dropped in Nashua, NH, after nearly 70s on the weekend, it’s 24 degrees this early am with snow coming in parts of the state, but rain here so homemade soup and bread are planned for Wed. Hope that FedEx doesn’t screw up future deliveries.
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention, the intro paragraphs to this post were so descriptive. You are a talented writer, my blog friend
The beautiful autumn foliage has vanished much too soon. It's bleak and cold, and today it's pouring rain. Definitely perfect weather for homemade soup and bread!
DeleteWell, FedEx delivered all my orders on time today (at the right address!).
Thanks for your kind words about my writing.
I could not live up in the mountains where you live. Too isolated for me! I also couldn't drive on a narrow mountain road, Yikes! I see you did get your order by FedEx. Good! Our grocery prices in MN have not gone down at all yet. We keep hoping and waiting, but to no avail. Just filled my car and it was 3.49.9 a gallon still. Ugh!
ReplyDeleteIT's 23 degrees here today. We have about 7-8 inches of fresh snow and I have to go shovel some on my deck and around the area's that get plowed, so they can grab that snow I push out too.
I like the peace and privacy here, but there are an enormous amount of inconveniences and unexpected problems. The price of groceries are still high here, too. I can hardly afford the things I used to buy. There are snow flurries tonight but no expected accumulation (thank goodness).
DeleteBleak, indeed. At least here in Ohio. Cold and snowy this morning. I have to venture out to the grocery store today, but thankfully it's only about 5 minutes away. Prices have not gone down here. I think they've gone up. Your pics are certainly atmospheric and moody.
ReplyDeleteWinter is coming like it or not. I'm in the 'not' category. Take care. Stay warm. Hope your groceries arrive quickly.
Paranormal John
You're fortunate to have a store five minutes away. Mine is five light years away. FedEx delivered my order on time. It was 18 degrees last night with snow flurries. Today the "high" temperature is 29 degrees. Spring can't come soon enough....
