THE TWO THAT GOT AWAY

MAE WEST

MARIA RASPUTIN

I've met a lot of famous people when I lived in California and I've written about some of my encounters on previous blog posts - - John Wayne, Sonny and Cher, Groucho Marx, Ronald Reagan, Ann Miller, Liza Minnelli, Joan Rivers, Shelley Winters, Raquel Welch......and that's only a few.
I haven't even mentioned the porn stars (no, I'm not kidding).

The great thing about Hollywood (at least when I lived there) was that it was fairly easy to cross paths with famous people. And I knew many extremely colorful characters who knew famous people. The connections were everywhere. At the time, it was exciting and I loved it.

Despite all the celebrities I met, I still think the most about the two that got away. Two people whom I desperately wanted to meet but never did. Incredibly, they were both listed in the L.A. phone book:
Actress Mae West and Maria Rasputin - daughter of Grigory Rasputin, the infamous Russian monk who knew Tsar Nicholas II.

I still have the old L.A. phone book

Maria Rasputin was a colorful character in her own right - a former governess, cabaret dancer, and long-time circus lion tamer.
She soothed the wild beasts with her mesmeric eyes.

She was indeed listed in the phone book (trust me, there aren't many Rasputins in the white pages....). She lived in obscurity in a modest place on Larissa near the Hollywood Freeway.
I staked out her residence numerous times hoping to get a glimpse of her, but I never did. She was already in her late 70s then and died a short time later.

Since she was listed in the phone book, I regret not calling her. I was a heckuva lot more brash in my youth than I am now. But - - let's be rational here - - I didn't know what to say.
What's a good opening line when you want to talk to Rasputin's daughter?
"Hey, I was a big fan of your father".....??

Maria Rasputin

Mae West. Film star legend. Hollywood icon. I was an immensely huge Mae West fan back then and really wanted to meet her, but she was already in her 80s and led a reclusive life.

Ironically, one of my close friends and fellow musician Anthony had met her (I wrote about Anthony in a previous blog post - his sister Clara wanted to marry me).
Anthony's encounter with Mae West happened long ago when he was about twelve years old. His mother was doing some sort of Hollywood charity work and Mae West was involved. They were both invited to West's apartment. Anthony, at that time, had never heard of  Mae West and wasn't particularly interested. He remembered that the apartment living room was decorated entirely in white and he said Mae West was very alluring.

Ravenswood Apartments on Rossmore
Long-time residence of Mae West

Mae West had lived in the same Hollywood apartment building for over forty-five years - - in fact, she had a lifetime lease. It was called Ravenswood and is located on north Rossmore, only a few blocks from Paramount Studios on Melrose (where she worked during her heyday). Incidentally, West's apartment number was 611.

I initially thought that Mae West owned Ravenswood, but she didn't. Ravenswood was built by Paramount Studios in 1930 and had once housed such famous residents as Clark Gable and Ava Gardner.

One day I was driving and my car broke down directly in front of Ravenswood. It hadn't dawned on me where I was until I looked up and saw the big Ravenswood sign on the roof.

Holy crap! Mae West lives here! I was astonished and delighted that fate had unceremoniously dumped me right in front of her abode.

There's no satisfactory resolution to this story because I never did meet Mae West. I did my best to get a glimpse of her but to no avail.
In retrospect this sounds crazy, but on several later occasions (usually at night) I would sit on a wall across the street and gaze at Mae West's windows.

West had been listed in the L.A. phone book for many years. When she was younger she actually answered the phone and talked to her fans (imagine any star doing that nowadays!).

Despite my reluctance to call Maria Rasputin, I did call Mae West's number several times. I talked to her long-time companion Paul Novak, who was a former body builder and had been one of several muscle-bound pretty boys featured in West's Las Vegas show.

Novak was thirty years younger than West. It was rumored that they had been lovers, but I have my doubts (for some private reasons that I won't disclose here). Paul was kind and easy to talk to. He told me that Mae was very deaf and no longer spoke on the phone (I already assumed that, because I'd heard of all the trouble she had with her hearing while she was making the movie Myra Breckinridge).

Like a sappy jackass, I wrote a humorous poem and fan letter and sent it to West. Paul said that he'd make sure she got it. She did. Within a few days I received a letter and signed photo from MaeI still have it.

Mae West, in later years, with Paul Novak (Paul is on the left) and Mickey Hargitay (he later was Jayne Mansfield's husband)

P.S.
I wrote this post many years ago. I decided to rehash it for those who never read it.
Unfortunately, the once-elegant Ravenswood has now fallen into decay and is largely forgotten.
Hollywood is NOTHING like it used to be.     Jon

  1. Your last statement is so true, Jon, as the lives of today's celebrities hold absolutely no interest and fascination compared to the Golden Age. Thanks for this rehashed post.

    1. I'm glad that I grew up in Southern Calif. when a lot of things from Hollywood's golden age still existed.
Things have changed drastically and remnants of the past have completely vanished. I used to love it, but now I'd never go back

  2. The only one I envy is Ann Miller! What a dancer. Mickey hargitay is Mariska's father. With Jayne Mansfield. She of law and order, bong bong, SVU.

    1. Ann Miller was sweet and down to earth - - very likeable.
Mickey Hargitay owned a flower shop in Hollywood, after Jayne Mansfield's death. I think the flower shop still exists, owned by the Hargitay family.

  3. What an interesting post, Jon. Is Ravenswood still standing? Has the general area gone down, too? I'd never heard of Maria Rasputin, just her famous daddy. I'm sorry you didn't get to meet them. Mae what quite a character. Being young in Hollywood back then had to be exciting and fun. I lived in Miami in the mid-70's and saw the tail end of 'old Miami', which was quite charming. Different story today. No thanks! Hope you're feeling better!
    The warmer days help.

    1. Ravenswood was located in a lovely, quiet area of Hollywood. It's still standing but has been neglected and is in really bad shape, from what I've heard.
Rasputin had three legitimate children from his marriage - - two daughters and a son. I think Maria was the only one who came to America.
Hollywood was a fantastic place when I knew it. Unfortunately it's now nearly unrecognizable.
TN is presently being pulverized by thunderstorms. I'm eagerly waiting for the sunshine to return.

  4. Such a life you have been living! I could not imagine, not in my wildest dreams, celebrities being accessible now. I spent part of my childhood in San Diego, which was like another planet compared to LA at that time. Thanks for the retell.

    1. San Diego is beautiful, but definitely another planet compared to L.A.
I've had so many adventures in Hollywood that no one would believe it. I'll (eventually) post more.

  7. I'm so glad you resurrected this, Jon. What a way you have with intriguing (teasing) post titles. That first image of Maria Rasputin reminds me of a young Carly Simon ... yet far more interesting I would imagine.

    1. I've always liked that title. I'm often concerned that my Hollywood stories might be boring or self-serving. I'm glad that you enjoy them.
      Carly Simon? Yes, maybe....

  8. You've met a lot of memorable people indeed, Jon! I too would have enjoyed meeting May West, I think.
The only people remotely in this category I've met were Paul Newman, once, with Ken Kesey. They were filming 'Sometimes a Great Notion' on the Oregon coast when I was in h med school, and I happened by the filming site along the Siletz river, and Kesey asked me if I'd like to 'smoke a joint with Paul Newman. I think I said "Sure!"...we didn't smoke anything, Newman was in a trailer on the site and offered me a Coors. I sat and listened to them for a couple minutes before they had to resume whatever they were doing.
I also sat next to Bill Pullman on a plane going to Montana, had no idea who he was. We had a nice hour or two conversation. I actually was working with his brother John, a doc in Montana on a drug FDA approval project.
    Anyway, hope you're well.

    1. Your meeting with Paul Newman is fascinating. I remember seeing "Sometimes a Great Notion" when it first came out. I went with a friend in Anaheim.
It's ironic that you met Bill Pullman on a plane and was working with his brother.
      Thanks for sharing these stories!

  10. I figured Hollywood has changed...like everything else. Out of curiosity how did you meet Sonny and Cher? Did you hear them perform in their younger days?

    1. Sonny and Cher were attending a modern dance performance at the L.A. Music Center. They knew one of the dancers. I only talked with them very briefly during intermission, at the upstairs bar. They were polite and down-to-earth.
Hollywood was never perfect, but it was like a paradise long ago compared to how it is today. I'd never go back.

  11. You were lucky to meet some of the stars when Hollywood was Hollywood.
When my family moved to So Cal in the late fifties and early sixties (1956-1962) just before I was born, they lived in LA.
My aunt Lea and her husband rented a home on Sunset blvd and the 405 freeway in 1961 and 1962. Because of the Bel Air fire of 1961 many celebrities were renting homes in Westwood and Brentwood til their homes in Bel Air were rebuilt. Among them was their neighbor Burt Lancaster and his wife and kids who my aunt’s daughter played and went to school with. Mr Lancaster even took them up to see his compound in Bel Air as it was being rebuilt. He would at times attend PTA meetings and got the middle school my cousin and his kids attended to increase the number of field trips. A very generous man.:) Lea and Ma (my grandmother) would window shop and lunch and end up meeting several celebrities. One day Ma was at the Robinsons dept store in Bev Hills and found a red coat with a torn price tag. Saw a white haired lady who appeared to be a salesgirl, the ‘salesgirl’ turned around and it was Barbara Stanwyck ! Ms Stanwyck courtesly walked Ma to the cashier. Another time they went to lunch and Shirley Booth was seated right across from them.
Their most memorable was at a Wil Wrights ice cream parlor in July 1962 when Bette Davis , Ma’s favorite actress, came in with her agent and a studio executive and sat right behind them. Lea encouraged Ma to talk to her idol. The formidable Davis looked up and gave Ma a big smile. Ms Davis proudly mentioned she was just going to start filming a new movie and it was going to be the cats whiskers. The film was Whatever Happpened to Baby Jane. On another occasion Lea went to a pharmacy/ gift shop on Robertson blvd to buy hair color for her dishwater blond hair. In the aisle of hair products was a gal with sunglasses and a scarf and a shock of platinum hair sticking out, looking at hair combs. Lea thought the gal looked familiar and ended up talking with her about hair care products. The gal slid up her sunglasses and it was none other than Marilyn Monroe ! Marilyn decried the fact that bleaching destroyed her hair and she had to wear wigs. Meanwhile my aunts kid brother and sister were waiting in the car for Lea and she told them about Marilyn. Needless to say they met one of their idols. Just a month later Marilyn had passed.:( Lea told me about a loon who used to race down Sunset blvd in a Rolls Royce. The loon would run stop signs and have breathtaking near misses. At times Lea would end up with the loon just about riding the bumper of her 1959 Olds 88 Holiday coupe ! Finally one day the loon ended up stopping at a traffic light next to Lea, Lea figured the loon was probably a spoiled rotten kid driving daddy’s Rolls. She turned to look at the driver and it was none other than Zsa Zsa Gabor !!! Crazy ZsaZsa smiled and laughed. Years later when Zsa Zsa had an altercation with a Bev Hills cop over a traffic citation, Lea said it was about time that they caught that crazy thing ! :) -Rj

    1. Thank you so much for this absolutely fascinating comment. Many people wonder how I met so many stars - - but you've confirmed that it was much easier to run into famous people then than it is now.
BTW one of my piano teachers was a close friend of Zsa Zsa and I met her once. She wasn't as zany as she looked
I'll try to post more Hollywood stories....and hopefully you won't remain anonymous.

  12. Left out Mae West. In 1954 when my dad’s family was still in San Francisco, my aunt Lea and her husband treated my grandmother to Mae West and her revue show at the then famous Sky Room at the Mapes Hotel in Reno.
Instead of the usual showgirls, Mae had a bevy of musclemen ! As granma said years later it was about time us ladies had a gander of beefcake just as the men had countless ganders of cheesecake.:)
We always wondered if Mae had her way with her bevy of musclemen, or if the musclemen had their way with each other. -Rj
