This will undoubtedly be posted after midnight, so it will officially be the day after Thanksgiving.
I initially wanted to write about the horrible thing that happened to me on my trip to town last Tuesday, but I'll save it for my next post.
It will give you something to look forward to.
Thanksgiving is over already?? Heck, I still have two pumpkins left from Halloween. Time is rudely eluding me and I don't like it.
My Turkey Day was completely mundane and embarrassingly boring. As much as I love turkey (I could eat it every day) I decided to buy a ham instead (it's easier to prepare). Then I suddenly realized that I had a roasted chicken in the fridge, so I decided to eat that instead. With stuffing, asparagus, and cranberries.
Since I'm here all alone, it doesn't matter what I eat - - or when. I'll have the ham this weekend. It'll last a long time.
Lately I've been obsessed with eating apples accompanied by peanut butter and caramel topping (the kind of topping you put on ice cream). And the peanut butter has to be crunchy.
Thanksgiving Day was sunny and fairly mild - but strangely hazy and rather surrealistic. And there was ample gunfire from the hunters. I thought they might take off a day for Thanksgiving. Hell, they must already have their turkeys....
Snow (yes, snow) is predicted for Monday night, but I'll believe it when I see it. The snow predictions around here are not always accurate.

Blogger has been making it difficult for me to center my text.
Also, it's still impossible for me to leave comments on blogs that have settings for comments to appear on popup windows.
I haven't been able to alleviate the "glitch".
Be proud of me! I can now answer people in the comment section, just like you! I have been so envious of that skill, and I finally found it was a setting I needed to change. I can't wait to hear about your horrible thing that happened.

I understand how "so-so" holidays can be anymore - especially as we get older and our family begins to dwindle down one by one. After my dad passed away and my brother (my only sibling and my parents only other child) abandoned us and left two years ago, holiday gaterings have just not been the same.
ReplyDeleteThe weather here has much been the same as you describe yours - unusually strange for this time of the year and it gets dark around 5-6pm now. At least your ham will keep you fed pretty good for a few days.

Holidays are never quite the same as we grow older. I don't have any siblings but I used to have an enormous amount of relatives. Almost all of them are deceased now, except for my cousins.

Well, after I read your blog I checked my weather and we too are expecting snow Monday night!
ReplyDeleteMy Thanksgiving consisted of helping serve 900 people at our community meal. It is always a fun time and I enjoy it. We start our prep on Monday and did 92 turkeys. I cracked 400 eggs for the sweet potato souffle. I typically do not like to cook but I really enjoy this type of activity.

I bought a 4 pound white turkey breast and it was delicious. Next time I'll get regular dressing though and not the cornbread type; it was decent but I prefer the other. Snow? Ugh. I'm hoping we don't get any lowland snow this winter; I haven't bothered to have my studless snow tires put on.
ReplyDeleteA turkey breast sounds good. At least you didn't have to go through the trouble of cooking a whole turkey. I had cornbread stuffing with my roasted chicken, but for some reason I didn't like it very much. Today I had rice to go with my leftovers.

The unpleasant issues with Blogger never seem to end. As soon as I fix one thing, another one appears. My Thanksgiving was relaxing - which is just about all I could ask for.
DeleteIt makes me happy that you take the time to prepare nice meals for yourself. Cooking lavish meals for other people is something I've always enjoyed doing, but so far, I haven't summoned much enthusiasm for treating myself. (But I'll get there!)
ReplyDeleteWow! Your trees are naked! Looks like the middle of winter, but snow? I sure hope not. You don't need to rush into that kinda coldness too soon. The trees in our yard are shedding their leaves very slowly. (That way, they can prolong my back-breaking, leaf-raking exercise as long as possible.)

I used to love cooking elaborate meals,Susan, but now that I live alone my enthusiasm has waned somewhat (and my present kitchen is annoyingly small). I often have simple, easy meals but I like to make nice things for the holidays.

Now I'm super concerned WHAT happened on your last trip to town. "Horrible" isn't a word I take lightly ... nor one (I think) you would, either. LOVE your red dinnerware, only second to the burnt orange I (sadly) had to pack away this morning. Ever since we were forced to comply with the 'new' Blogger I've had no luck centering my text. The way I get around it is to click "Right Align." Then - and only then -I click "Center" and it obeys.
ReplyDeletePerhaps my ordeal was more annoying than horrible,,,,,but I still think "horrible" is apt. Autumn seemed much too brief this year, Yesterday I very reluctantly put away my Halloween mugs and got out the winter ones.

Chicken is better than turkey, I think. And with cranberries just yay! The photo of your ham cracked me up. But then I thought if that were my ham I would open up the horseradish, find a movie and have a pig fest - no pun intended - all by my lonesome. Your obsession also sounds delicious. I think I have that same red dinnerware in my storage bin. It should be perfect for Christmas! I hope you write about your trip into town soon. I am down to just two blogs since the election. ReplyDeleteI like turkey and chicken but if I was forced to choose, turkey would win. I laughed at the idea of having a pig fest - sounds good to me (but I'm all out of horseradish). BTW, the red dinnerware is indeed perfect for Christmas.

That sounds like the perfect day to me. Four of us for dinner and I ate way to much...thirds...but my aunt's cooking is soo good!!! I still have little pumpkins and gourds on my porch and window sills and don't have the heart to throw them out. There still in good shape. I have to say...I love your wide window sills!!! Why you could do a mini tree in each window for christmas!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a nice holiday with lots of delicious food. It would be nice to have Thanksgiving several times a year. I'm always very reluctant to throw out my Halloween pumpkins. I'll eventually have to cut them and save the seeds.

Late in reading this post, Jon, but took the holiday off from the PC. We did cook a small turkey and made the famous green bean casserole, mashed sweet potatoes, stuffing, and gravy and homemade cranberry relish. Dessert was pumpkin pie with whipped cream. This was our first turkey day home in the past several years and while it was onto a party of two, it’s nice to have leftovers this year! That ham looks like it will provide meals for several days. And, also will be waiting to hear about the shopping experience, however horrible, frustrating or annoying...at least it’s over now.

DeleteYour Thanksgiving dinner sounds wonderful- very traditional. I love pumpkin pie, but I had an apple pie this time. I'll probably have the ham this weekend, and it will indeed last at least a few days.
