MEANWHILE, BACK IN THE WILDERNESS

It's after dawn and I haven't been to bed yet. Last night was inundated with storms. Donner und blitzen. Torrential downpours. And hail.

By midnight I had given up trying to do anything constructive. I crawled into bed and read for several hours. I'm presently in a D.H.Lawrence mode....and I'm loving it. I've dusted off books that I haven't read since high school.

The temperature dropped drastically by dawn. Friday was unseasonably warm - nearly 75 degrees (that's Fahrenheit, for those of you in Uruguay).

Warm, windy, balmy - - with ample glimpses of springlike sunshine.

I let the cats out to savor the day. Here are Bosco and Scruffy working on their tans.

Scruffy (who is usually camera-shy) actually took a moment to pose for me.

The 'possum wandered onto the back porch to eat some bread. I took these photos from the kitchen window.

After an exhausting hour of dozing outside, my cat Scratch came inside to doze by a window.

I checked out the neighboring cow meadow but the cows were nowhere in sight.

Just before dusk I went out for a brief stroll (in the back yard). It was already starting to get cloudy - but the evening colors and shadows were impressive.

The sky was deliciously dramatic
(not unlike myself...)

The setting sun suddenly burst through the clouds and illuminated the trees with a golden blaze.

I'm too tired to stay awake. Gonna crawl into bed and get some beauty sleep (Gawd knows, I need it).
Have a pleasant Saturday.

I think it's Saturday.....

  1. I always love your woods pictures. You always manage to get the best shadows and colors. Well, it's warm here too, but I'm enjoying it. I see the Garbor Sisters are still there and no opossums stew has been made yet. The cats look happy to get again. I also noticed on your bookcase who have a lot of porcelain rabbits. Do you collect them?

    1. All my 'possum photos seem to look alike - - although Eva is a lighter color 'possum than Zsa Zsa.
I have a "thing" for owls and rabbits.
      ...and furry creatures...

  2. Lovely yesterday, cold and windy today. We went shopping yesterday with the air on in the truck and this morning with the heat on.

    1. The warm weather has been wonderful, but tonight there's a hard frost and I had to put the heat on.

  4. HA! I loved your line about the cat's exhausting hour of napping outside, followed by some more napping inside. They do have the napping skill down to a science, don't they?

    1. I'm getting to the point where I have the napping skill down to a science, too...but Scratch seems to snore more than I do (I think).

  5. Hi Jon. You should start painting those sunsets. Totally from left field I googled what food opossums eat. I know you have previously fed them cat food. They will eat all sorts of stuff including fruits, vegetables and nuts. You could get them into a 5-a-day habit! MaggieB

    1. I was surprised to learn that 'possums are basically scavengers and will eat just about anything. I usually give them bread, apples, potatoes, cat food - - or any scraps that I have.

  7. I'm so taken with that image of Scratch! ...and the accompanying wicker 'guardian' of your keepsakes. I feel there's a story to be told, but my mind's too weary.

Ya, the weather's definitely bi-polar. Yesterday and today we were in the mid-60's. I'm loving it ... while it lasts.

    1. That wicker thing belonged to my parents. It must be pretty old because I remember they had it in California. I decided to use it rather than throw it out. BUT...I painted it yellow (it was the only paint I happened to have) and I hate the color. That's why I posted the photo with a sepia tint..../.

Someday I'll summon the energy to re-paint it.

    1. The sky was really dramatic and inspiring. The rain clouds were gathering and the cold front was just beginning to blow in.

  10. Jon, your photos are especially refreshing today. I spent my afternoon at H&R Block, then came home to find a letter from Verizon saying someone used my SSN to buy a cell phone in Modesto. Spent a lot of time on hold with the phone co. and the Sheriff. Looking at your beautiful and fun photos kept me occupied and calm. Thanks for that.

    1. I've always maintained that 95 per cent of our problems are caused by other people. Someone "stole" my identity when I lived in TX, the tale is far too long to go into...
I'm so sorry to hear about your latest ordeal- - hopefully the culprit will be caught. At a time like that, the word "calm" abandons our vocabulary.
I'm glad my photos had a soothing effect.

    2. It happened before, several years ago, and was a great inconvenience. As I age, my tolerance of such things dwindles into the jumps. You mention Uruguay's temperature measuring system in your text. I hope the U.S. adopts same for time: by Carlin-calculus, even though I'm 67 years old, that's only 19 Celsius.

  11. Your photography is wonderful. I love the photo of Scruffy looking at the camera. For some reason this post reminds me of the movie Dances With Wolves. ...you are in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by hostile rednecks and a wild creature befriends you. Have you given the possum a name?

    1. Dances With Wolves is one of my favorite films (one of many).

I actually have two 'possums (two that I know of...). One is a lighter color than the other. I initially didn't want to name them because I was hesitant to get too "familiar" - BUT, a fellow blogger (Mistress Maddie)calls them Zsa Zsa and Eva.

  12. A nice visit in your world Jon. Always pleasant to see your cats and the beautiful light raining down on your oasis in the Tennessee hills.
